Zunächst gehörte Marr in der Schweiz dem Léman-Bund an, einen jungdeutschen Geheimbund, den er bald dominierte. Dann wandelte sich Marr zum Atheisten und bezog anarchistische Positionen. Das erste Mal wandte er sich gegen die Judenemanzipation und führte als Grund für seine Abneigung gegen den Liberalismus an, dieser habe sich den jüdischen Kapitalinteressen verschrieben. Auch die Begriffsbildung des Antisemitismus (1879) wird auf Marr zurückgeführt, zumal er auch die erste antisemitische politische Vereinigung in Deutschland ins Leben rief: die rassistische Antisemitenliga.
