Inscribed on front free endpaper: "Faithfully / David Belasco." then, below that: "To / George C. Atkins / January twenty-seven / 1930." 29 full page b&w photographs, with tissue guards bearing captions in red, comprising a frontispiece portrait of David Belasco and 28 numbered views of cast/costumes/sets (all present). Text includes: A Preface to The Merchant of Venice as arranged for the contemporary stage by David Belasco; Concerning Shylock; The Elizabethan Stage; Cast / Scenes / Present Production (followed by photograph section); Tributes; Mr. Belasco on the Comic Shylock; Warfield and Shylock; Vale! Previous owner's name/address embossed stamped on front free endpaper, the inside front hinge is a little weak but holding firmly, two photographs have a small mark in the margin, photograph tissue guards have light to moderate browning, light to moderate browning and some light foxing marks on some preliminary pages, moderate browning to fore-edge and bottom of text block, tears at the gutter of rear endpapers have been repaired. The attached paper jacket has heavy wear consisting of tears, chips and wrinkling - heaviest at bottom edge, slight fading at edges, larger tear a top of front panel has been repaired, light soiling and two small shallow dents on rear panel. Inscribed.

First Edition. 174 pp, small 4to (approx. 10 1/4" H) - medium blue boards with paper title labels on spine and front board and dark blue 'bee' device at bottom of front board. Inscribed on front free endpaper: "To ____ With cordial regards David Belasco, January 27, 1930." Title page continues, "and Acted Under His Direction at the Lyceum Theatre, New York with David Warfield in the Character of Shylock, December 21, 1922". Includes preface, chapters titled, 'Concerning Shylock', and 'The Elizabethan Stage', the playbill for the present production, along with 'The David Belasco Stage Arrangement of The Merchant of Venice'. Interior - pages browning lightly, a little more on endpapers, small soft bump to top corner of approx. pages 13-33, very light foxing to title page, dedication page, pages 29/30 and the two plates, otherwise clean and tight with no other previous ownership marks. Exterior - scattered tiny foxing marks on edges of textblock, two tiny marks on front board title label, light rubbing - a few small scratches on rear board, area of faint color fading on rear board and on spine, very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, minor edgewear, very light rubbing and soiling. Inscribed.
