Livre
Hardcover. Etat : Very Good. Etat de la jaquette : Good. This is "The Mycenæan World" by philologist and classical scholar John Chadwick. Professor Chadwick, along with Michael Ventris, cracked the secret of the ancient Mycenæan language, called Linear B, which were incised onto tablets and stone monuments - proving, in doing so, that Myceæan Linear B was actually an early form of Greek - thus changing forever the view of both science and history of the ancient Mediterranean civilizations. ********************************************** The Mycenæan culture was, of course , based on Crete, where their capital city, Knossos, has been one of the most important archaeological sites. This book, by a person who was directly involved with the study of this amazing early Greek culture , fully captures the lifestyle of the ancient inhabitants of Crete, capturing in words and pictures their daily routine, their arts and crafts, their religion, sports, and military prowess. The decipherment of Linear B contributed enormously - revealing in the incised words of the Mycenæans themselves, much of what their life was like. ***************************************** The book is generously illustrated with maps, drawings, and photographs Depicted is the ancient landscape, and, also, many of the remarkable works of art that have come down to us from that ancient world. Drawings are included that depict daily life - a life much like many other civilizations, but one that also entailed bull dancers, and one of the most famous of all ancient mythologies. ****************************************** TITLE : The Mycenæan World / AUTHOR : John Chadwick (1920 - 1998) / IMPRINT : Cambridge University Press / PLACE : Cambridge,England / DATE : (1976) / EDITION : Second Printing (so stated) / STATUS : OP / PHYSICAL DETAILS : Trade hardcover; Contains maps (6 by my count), numerous line drawings as well as reproductions of paintings, ancient and modern, photographs of landscapes, ancient ruins, ancient art works, and incised tablets, (depicting Linear B); has a Preface, a Bibliography, and an Index; [xviii] + 201 pages; approx. 6 3/8" x 93/8"; brown, paper-covered boards and spine with gilt lettering against a blue panel on spine; maps on end-papers (same on back as on front); photo-pictorial dust-jacket. ******************************************* CONDITION -- BOOK: VERY GOOD -- JACKET : GOOD PLUS -- This is a previously owned book that remains clean and attractive, with the following particulars noted :: EXTERIOR -- Binding is clean. Lettering on spine is bright. There are a couple of tiny dents to the bottom edge of the front board. Vague weathering to the top edge of the text-block - else the block edges are clean. BINDING -- Solid INTERIOR -- A tiny 'C3' is written in ink at the top fore-edge corner tip of the front free end-paper; else the interior is clean and free of marking. DUST-JACKET -- Head of spine panel has a small tear; top edge fo front panel is slightly crimped; surface rub is modest. The whole displays nicely. The flaps are unclipped. Coming from a university press, there was no price printed on the jacket; this was commonly done. The reverse side of the jacket displays mild toning. The whole is protected from further wear by a clear mylar cover.
