Hardcover. Etat : VG+. Etat de la jaquette : VG+. Art, Photos, Documents, Plan, Maps (illustrateur). 1st. Nelson province has a history as diverse as its terrain, beauty, coastal gems, rugged hill country and also the fruits of its land that stem from the efforts of its early settlers. They faced many difficulties and hardships when initiating this productive and appealing environment. When the time came to prepare a history of Nelson city and its provincial regions, based on that early settlement, the completion of the volume also faced a diverse set of factors. In 1951 the Nelson City Council decided such a history should be prepared and commissioned Ruth Allan, an academic with a strong interest and deep knowledge of NZ histrory, to compile the book. However, she died in March 1958, a few days before reaching her 40th birthday. Examination of the material she had gathered found a number of very long chapters, with several others begun but incomplete, in addition there were drafts and "amended" drafts, copious research notes and a comprehensive card index bibliography. Although there was this reservoir of material, it was also obvious that it was insufficient to produce the planned history, but it was decided work should proceed and Professor J C Beaglehole of Victoria University was appointed to oversee and edit the history. Ruth Allan's friends and associates familiar with her work on the book and her plans for its presentation co-operated on the task and an additional chapter on the exploration of the province was produced by Nancy M Taylor while Pamela Cocks completed another chapter dealing with issues arising over the allocation of land between the initial settlers and the New Zealand Company, the settlement organisers. Thus, eventually what is a very fine NZ pioneering history was completed --- a tribute to the original author and all those whose combined skills and efforts brought about this success. The completed volume of "Nelson" comprised 13 chapters covering differing aspects of "early settlement" including the area's pre-European Maori background, planning for the settlement and the arrival; of the first settlers from Britain, early urban and rural developments, the land problems, the Wairau Massacre and its aftermath, "lean years " that faced the settlers with another on later arriving German settlers. Basically, the history covers the period from the early 1840s when the New Zealand Company developed its plans for Nelson, to the earlry years of the 1850s by which time the settlers were well settled but serious questions regarding land ownership and distribution were still being worked through when the Company ceased operations, surrendered its charters, with the Crown assuming responsibility for the Company's affairs. Despite the difficulties faced in completing the text, "Nelson" turned out to be a substantial and well crafted volume. First edition 1965 produced by Reed for the Nelson City Council, 458 pages including bibliography and index. Illustrated with b/w photos and art, document reproductions plan and maps --- frontis and 27 illustration through the text block --- map end-papers. Brown hard covers with gilt spine titles are VG+, text block is excellent, no inscriptions. Wrap-round colour art DJ by Charles Heaphy. showing ships in Tasman Bay, is VG+ with two short tears, few chips.
