Some of these poems had appeared in The Partisan Review, The Kansas City Quarterly, Spirit, Voices, The Poetry Chap-Book, The Lyric, and The Saturday Review of Literature. Winthrop Palmer (1900-1988) was an American educator, author and poet. A graduate of Columbia University, she and her husband, businessman Carleton H. Palmer, were influential in the development and growth of Long Island University's C. W. Post Campus, where Mrs. Palmer was assistant professor of literature and fine arts. Winthrop Bushnell Palmer, was the widow of Carleton Humphreys Palmer, a former president and chairman of E. R. Squibb & Sons. Mrs. Palmer, who in 1974 became the first woman to serve as chairwoman of the board of trustees of Long Island University. She and her husband established the Palmer School of Library and Information Science at the C. W. Post campus of Long Island University. Palmer observes with rare perception and discipline of expression some truths and disenchantments of our present day, and gives new definition to the troubling immensities that confront the modern spirit.
