An abridgement of the narrative of Layard's second expedition to Assyria and Babylonia, 1849-51, published in 1853, under the title of Nineveh and Babylon. The Abridgement was first published in 1867 and is a sequel to the abridged version of Nineveh and its Remains. After the first publication of his discoveries, Layard (1817-94) was feted both as an explorer and archaeologist and praised for the perceived links of Assyrian names to biblical names and events. This title also of value for its account of Layard's travels in Assyria, Armenia and Kurdistan and of the inhabitants of those regions. A classic of archaeology and also a great travel narrative. The condition of this book is unusually fine. A couple of tiny rubs at the corners hardly noticeable. From a library containing many books in similar condition. Appears unread.
