Cloth. Etat : Very Good. Etat de la jaquette : Very Good. Not Stated (illustrateur). First edition. First edition copies of these three entertaining and scarce thrillers, in the original unclipped dust wrappers. The first editions of three works in the publisher's original cloth bindings, with the original unclipped dust wrappers. Library stamp to the rear paste down of Dead Hero.Three scarce thriller novels by three different writers. Dead to the World (1959), otherwise known as The Blonde in Suite 14, is No. 247 of the American Bloodhound Series and the sixth book in the Gil Vine Hotel Detective Mystery series by Prentice Winchell (1895-1976), under the pseudonym of Stewart Sterling. In this novel, the hotel security officer Gil Vine stakes his job and his life on a hunch which lead him southward in a blinding blizzard. Dead Hero (1964) is No. 464 of the American Bloodhound Series and the seventh title in the Brock Callahan series by William Campbell Gault (1910-1995). In this work, when the popular private investigator Brock "The Rock" Callahan finds himself suspected of the murder of a former teammate, he becomes as much the hunted as the hunter. Nothing but the Night (1968) is a thriller novel by John Blackburn (1923-1993). In this novel, murderess Anna Harb goes on a rampage in the hospital in which her daughter is being treated, and questions of psychic possession and psychological trauma arise. This book was made into a 1973 film starring Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing. In the publisher's original cloth bindings, with the original unclipped dust wrappers. Externally, cloth is very bright and smart. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally bright and clean, with the odd spot to the fore edge of Dead to the World and a library stamp to the rear paste down of Dead Hero. Dust wrappers remain mostly bright, with chipping to the upper extremities and to the tail of the spine of the wrap of Dead to the World, and a little creasing to the upper extremities of the wraps to Dead Hero and Nothing but the Night. Tape repairs to the reverse of the wraps to Dead to the World. Very Good. book.

Uniform matching recently rebacked hard back binding in publishers original full brown leather, the spines divided into five panels, red and black morocco lettered labels in the second and fourth, tools to the others, twin parallel line details across the panels, original end papers 32mo. 4½'' x 3¼''. Originally published in 7 volumes as the 'Whittingham Edition' this rather unusual full leather set has been rebacked. The second title pages refer to be published in 7 volumes, however, this set is over 14 volumes, because of this the binder has duplicated 7 volumes with two lots of different tools down the 14 spines, with generic titles to all 14. Illustrated title pages to seven volumes, other illustrations throughout the 14 volumes. From the private library of Thomas Valentine Smith with his bookplate to each front paste down. Thomas Valentine Smith inherited Ardtornish House, Morvern, Lochaber from his father, he was a sportsman and a vicarious adventurer and enjoyed entertaining parties of like-minded guests. To this end, he doubled the size of Ardtornish, adding two more towers, numerous service rooms, WC's and bathrooms. Member of the P.B.F.A. SHAKESPEARE, William.

Hardcover. Etat : Very Good. Etat de la jaquette : Very Good. 1st Edition. WILLIAMS, John Nothing But The Night . Denver, Colorado Alan Swallow, Publisher 1948 First Edition . Octavo, Publisher s stonewashed blue boards, black lettering to spine, copyright page shows 1948 date and author s name, 140 pp. First issue dust jacket with author bio to rear flap and The English Novelists to verso. Jacket has been price clipped. . The scarce debut novel from the National Book Award-winning University of Denver Professor John Williams! This novel was at least partially written in the Jungles of Calcutta by Williams while a member of the United States Army Air Force. Alan Swallow (who would become a mentor to Williams) agreed to publish the novel and also implored Williams to use his GI bill and enroll at the University of Denver where Swallow was an English Professor. Williams had largely distanced himself from this first novel, considering it contrary to what a novel should be and when his sophomore novel Butcher s Crossing was published he received a letter from Yvor Winter s wife (of whom he had become a disciple) exclaiming the novel was the most extraordinary reversal of procedure from your first novel. Praise that must have been pleasing to Williams. Critic Morris Dickstein on Williams s novel Stoner: something rarer than a great novel-it is a perfect novel, so well told & beautifully written, so deeply moving, it takes your breath away. . Book in about fine condition, clean internally save scant page yellowing from age. Very taut binding. Sharp corners. Single owner. Price clipped jacket VG with soiling and a spot of residue to front panel near spine. Chip to top panel and smaller chip to top rear panel. Overall a real treasure from a brilliant mind.
