Edition originale
4to. 3 parts in 1 volume. (12), 212, (1) ff. With title in woodcut border with Cavellet's device and initials at the foot, each part-title with Cavellet's woodcut device, 1 folding woodcut map (315 x 350 mm) showing Mount Sinai, 44 woodcuts in the text (including a portrait of the author by Geoffroy Tory), and numerous fine decorated initials. Main text set in italic, with preface and commentary in roman. Overlapping vellum (ca. 1600?), sewn on 5 cords, laced through the joints. Third edition of Belon's "Observations", the fruit of his extensive travels in Greece, Turkey, Egypt, Palestine, Lebanon and Syria from 1546 to 1549. The naturalist Pierre Belon (c. 1518-64), famous for his works on ornithology, was attached to the French embassy to the Ottoman Empire, led by Gabriel de Luetz (Luez, Luels) d'Aramont, who aimed at convincing Suleiman the Magnificent to join forces against Charles V. The envoy sailed for Venice in December 1546 and proceeded to Croatia. Here Luetz continued overland to Adrianople (Edirne), while Belon sailed for Istanbul by way of Greece, visiting Lemnos, Macedonia, Crete and Kavala en route. He reached Istanbul in August 1547, explored the city and continued to Alexandria, while Luetz accompanied Suleiman to Persia. Belon's journey continued to Cairo, Mount Sinai, Jerusalem, Damascus, Baalbek, Aleppo, and again to Turkey. - Unlike many contemporary travel writers, Belon does not elaborate on extraordinary adventures, but rather limits himself to detailed observations on mammals, fish, snakes, birds, plants and the manners and customs of the peoples he encountered, commenting only on what he himself had witnessed. The fine woodcuts, attributed to Arnold Nicolai and Pierre Goudet (Gourdelle), include a map of the Dardanelles (Hellespont), a folding map of Mount Sinai, a view of Alexandria, coins with Arabic inscriptions, 3 illustrations of Egyptian costumes, a giraffe, chameleon and, surprisingly, a flying dragon and an armadillo. - The first edition was published in 1553, illustrated with 35 woodcuts only, followed by a second, augmented edition in 1554. The present edition was a joint publication of Guillaume Cavellat and Gilles Corrozet, comprising two issues with either Corrozet's or Cavallet's name in the imprint. - With printed description from a sales catalogue on pastedown, slightly browned, some light waterstains, folding plate mounted. Overall in very good condition. - Adams B 564. Aboussouan 94. Ibrahim-Hilmy 61. Gay 10. Nissen, ZBI 304. Tobler 72f. USTC 6761. Cf. Macro, Bibliography of the Arabian Peninsula, 505 (1st ed. 1553). Atabey 93 (2nd ed.). Blackmer 115 (same copy). Weber II, 153 (1st ed. 1553). Henze I, 237 (first edition). Hage Chahine 393 (later ed.). For the author: Dictionnaire des orientalistes, 75f.

Third Edition. 6.25" x 9.0", Epistle, Preface and Table of Contents, 22 unnumbered pages, 211 leaves numbered only on the recto, Privelege of the king [2 pp, hand numbered]. Printed in French with fabulous woodcut first initials throughout and 41 wood cut illustrations including mammals, sea creatures, reptiles, plants, maps and a three-quarter profile of the author. Text is in italics with chapter headings and illustration descriptions in roman. The attractive woodcuts are attributed to Arnold Nicolai and Pierre goudet. In addition to the animal woodcuts, there are others including coins with Arabic markings, Egyptian style of dress, a Turkish archerer and two maps; one of Alexandria and its harbor from the perspective of the sea, and the other a birdseye view of both sides of the Hellespont. Originally published in 1553, this third edition, in two issues, was a joint effort between Corrozet and Guillaume Cavellat, with each having a named imprint. The elaborate woodcut border of the title page has Cavellat's device in the bottom corners, but the title page of books 2 & 3 have Corrozet's device with a heart and rose in the center surrounded by a scroll. Pierre Belon, sometimes included with the descriptive "du Mans", was a Renaissance Man with interest in the natural world, including the study of animals, ichthyology, ornithology, sociology, geography and as one of the earliest practitioners of comparative anatomy. Early in his career he served as the apothecary to Cardinal Francois of Tournon, to whom he dedicated these volumes. Under the Cardinal's patronage, he was allowed the opportunity to sail the near east as an attaché in the diplomatic mission led by Gabriel de Luetz to address Suleiman the Magnificent. He separated from the main entourage in Alexandria and traveled the near east cataloging his insightful, naturalist observations. Translation of the title page: "The Observations Of Several Singularities & memorable things, found In Greece, Asia, Judée, Egypt, Arabic, & Other Foreign Countries, compiled In three books, by Pierre Belon du Mans. Renewd again with augmented drawings. To my lord Cardinal of Tournon. The catalog containing the most notable things in this present book is the other part of this leaflet. In Paris, They are sold in the great hall of the palace, in the shop of Gilles Corrozet, 1555 With privilege of the King." Very good with spotting on the edges and light sporadic foxing throughout. A handful of coded words in manuscript on the recto and verso of the title page. Ex-libris stamp removed from title and last page, taped reinforcement to rear of title page. The map of Mt. Sinai is present and bound in prior to p. 126. The map is in VG condition with a small piece of tape on the bottom rear recto, early light wear through at the center of map along the confluence of folds. Contemporary black half leather binding with brown variegated alligator skin over boards, five raised bands on the spine, title label in gilt on the spine with date blind stamped at the bottom.

(Graesse, I, 331 - Brunet, I, 762 - Larousse, 524). BEL EXEMPLAIRE, frais, au corps d'ouvrage sans rousseurs. NICE COPY. PICTURES AND MORE DETAILS ON REQUEST.

On his return to France he was taken under the patronage of Cardinal de Tournon, who provided him with the means for undertaking an extensive scientific journey. Starting in 1546, he travelled through Greece, Asia Minor, Egypt, Arabia and Palestine, and returned in 1549. Livre
Hardcover. Etat : Good. [12 leaves], 468 pp., [2], (errors in pagination), woodcut device on title, portrait of Belon, 45 woodcut illustrations in text, 2 plans, missing folding map, + Une lettre manuscrite du President du Comite pour la souscription pour l?érection de la statue de Pierre Belon solicitant Mr. Jourlet pharmacien à Chinon le 15 mars 1885 + Le livret de souscription contenant la biographie de Belon + Une Coupure de presse relatant l?inauguration de la Statue, later mid-18th century fleuron gilted French full calf binding, marbled endpapers, previous owner?s inscription on title page, light damp stain to margin of few pages, scattered foxing and darkening. Pierre Belon (1517-64) was one of the first explorer-naturalists. ?He spent three years travelling in the Levant, from 1546 to 1549. His journey was inspired by a desire to see the plants and medicinal substances of which he had read, but his travels through Greece, Asia Minor, Egypt and the Holy Land resulted in observations more than merely botanical, in a most remarkable work which discusses the antiquities, customs and manners of the countries Belon visited, as well as the natural history.? (Blackmer). The information he supplies on the people, way of life and natural history of the Near East is remarkable for its accuracy and objectivity. ?His was the most documented account of the Levant which had appeared up to that time in French. Of importance is his description of Cairo after 30 years of Turkish occupation.? (Blackmer). Although Belon was trained as a pharmacist, he experienced life in the Eastern Mediterranean as a member of a diplomatic mission to the East. Gabriel d?Aramon, French Ambassador to Istanbul from 1547 to 1554, took with him the archaeologist Pierre Giles together with Pierre Belon and they were later joined by the founding figure in European Arabic studies, Guillaume Postel, and the King?s cosmographers André Thévet and Nicolas de Nicolay. The remarkable books published by these great writers and travellers provided Europeans with more accurate information on the Near East than had been available before. The ?Observations.? was first published in 1553, the second edition in 1554. The second edition is a much more sumptuous production than the first. The woodcut title, the portrait of Belon, the folding map of Mt. Sinai and the head and tail pieces first appear in the second edition. The illustrations of the natural history specimens in the letterpress are the same in both editions. Later editions appeared in 1555 and 1588. Apart from the ?Observations?, Belon wrote a number of other works, which contributed greatly to the progress of natural sciences in the 16th century. These included two works containing information on the specimens he collected during his journey: one concerning wild life and people, 'Portrait d?Oyseau, animaux etc' published in Paris in 1557, the other, 'De Arbotius Coniferis, resiniferis etc.' on trees published in Paris in 1553.
