Hard cover. Dark blue cloth over boards. Gold spin end front title, front w/ 2 stars. Blue top page block. Lightly trimmed side, bottom edges. 280 p. 21 cm. Author's note at back re: fictional points. Fictionalization story of a family from the Southhampton region of England caught in the surprise German bombing assaults early in World War II. They retreat to the country along the coast, and to their recreational sailing yacht. The young couple and three young children, one a baby, search for secure water, milk, provisions, warmth, and harboring as bombings drive others away from growing panic, typhoid, cholera. They head to sea with courage and skill, rescue downed British flyers, and in turn are thanked by the Royal Navy, and aided in further journeys. A story of quick thinking in the face of hardship, moving always toward an uncertain future. Nevil Shute, a flyer during WWII, and an engineer, created these literary scenarios early during wartime, he wrote at book's end, for those having only academic understanding toward making public safety needs understood. With the bombings, newspapers, radio, electricity, phones were not available to the military or the public. Very good. No dust jacket. Sun-fade to spine. Tight, square. 1.
