Cloth. Etat : Good +. No Jacket. First American. FIRST AMERICAN EDITION of Budd¿s lectures on the diseases of the stomach, delivered at the College of Physicians, London, as the Croonian Lectures. George Budd was professor of medicine at King¿s College Hospital and lecturer at the Royal College of Physicians. His contributions to medical literature include his Diseases of the Liver (1845), which included the first description of cirrhosis of the liver, als known as "Budd¿s disease." See: Garrison and Morton 3619; DNB, III, p. 219. Cordasco 50- 0263; Hirsch, I, p. 611; Munk¿s Roll, IV, p. 27. 8vo. 283, [ads] 4 pp. Blind-stamped brown cloth, rubbed, spine faded, gilt letter on spine mostly gone. Wear to the tip of the spine, small pieces missing, lighter wear to the foot. Front hinge starting between end pages, but still a very, clean copy with very litte foxing internally. Very small pin hole in external rear gutter - perhaps a bug? Owner's signature on fep. Apparently the pagination on this book is confusing to say the least. After the title page, there is a one page advertisement for the lectures. There is then a table of contents (2pp ending on page number vii) which calls for lecture 1 to begin on page 9 which it does, but is numbered 1 at the bottom of the page. There are 283 pages followed by 4 pages of advertisements for new books by the Wood company. There is then a 44 pages unnumbered catalog of books for the Samuel S. and William Wood company entitled "Catalogue of Books on Medicine, Anatomy, Surgery, Agricutlrue, &c, &c., &c and dated 1846. Overall a good + copy and most unusual, especially bound with the 1846 catalog. I have not been able to find any other copy with the 44 page 1846 catalog of books for sale. Scarce.

Cloth. Etat : Very Good. Not Stated (illustrateur). First edition. A fascinating 19th century study on the diseases and disorders of the stomach. The first edition of this work, rebacked with the original cloth backstrip and boards laid down. George Budd (1808-1882) was an English physician, medical writer and academic. His treatise Diseases of the Liver (1845) systematised the practical knowledge of liver diseases for a generation. It was followed by this work, Diseases of the Stomach, in 1855. His report on cases of cholera in the Dreadnought during 1837, and his statistical account of cases collected from the records of the same hospital in the epidemic of 1832, were also standard works. 32 pages of publisher's advertisements to the rear. Rebacked with the original cloth backstrip and boards laid down. Externally smart, with some wear to the extremities and bumping to the boards. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally bright and clean, except for the odd spot, and tidemarks to the rear paste down and rear free end paper. Very Good. book.
