Hardcover. Etat : Near Fine. 1st Edition. BOOK DESCRIPTION: 8vo, 364 pgs, illustrations, maps, facsimiles. Top edge gilt, other edges untrimmed. Publisher's dark red cloth. Limited to 1000 copies. CONTENTS DESCRIPTION: Near fine. EXCELLENT COLLECTOR'S CONDITION. Interior is clean and free of marks; solid and tight. CONTENTS DESCRIPTION: The bandits and outlaws along the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers were significant problems in the early flat-bottom boat days. The author explores the role of the Harpes. This group were notorious and killed for the sake of killing. Other bandits robbed along the old Natchez Trace, that 500 mile wilderness route from Natchez, Mississippi to the settlements in Ohio and Kentucky. I recently drove over 400 miles of the Natchez Trace Parkway from Tennessee to Natchez, Mississippi. What a jewel of a road; beautiful, quiet, and without pesky stop signs or lights. We took our time and stopped at some of the many historical sites and signs along the way. The original road is visible in numerous places. This Rothert book is a great read before heading out and retracing the Natchez Trace route. A trip well worth taking. What an epic route those old pioneers had walking or riding the Trace back to homes up in the Ohio and Kentucky country from old Natchez.
