Moderate crinkling to paper at gutter. Pages are heavily tanned and foxed with visible markings throughout. Binding throughout is slightly loose, however all page remain attached. Pencil and pen markings to free endpapers. Boards have moderate edge-wear with bumping to corners and rubbing to surfaces. Slight crushing to spine ends. Gilt lettering is darkened. Visible wear marks to boards. Book has a slight forward lean.

The jacket is somewhat crumpled and shows several closed tears and one small missing chip on the front panel; it is not price-clipped. Uncommon in the first printing of this edition.
