Pas de couverture. Etat : Bon. 1776. Jolie copie manuscrite d'époque du premier livre philosophique de Denis Diderot. L'auteur y critique les dévots, leurs préjugés religieux, leur superstition, « plus injurieuse à Dieu que l athéisme », et leur fanatisme. Il expose ensuite les trois positions philosophiques relatives à l existence de Dieu : l athéisme, le scepticisme et le déisme. Cette attaque contre la religion fit scandale et l'ouvrage fut condamné en 1746 par un arrêt du Parlement de Paris. Exécutée du vivant de Diderot, cette copie fut copiée sur une autre datée de 1765, attestant de l'intérêt que suscitait l'oeuvre trente ans après sa condamnation. Des notes marginales se répondent sur l identification de personnes évoquées par Diderot dans sa treizième pensée. La pensée n°55 a été oubliée. Rare spécimen de copie des premiers pas philosophiques de l'un des plus grands philosophes du siècle des Lumières.

Londres, Chez Porphyre à s. Thomas, 1757. In-16 (105 x 72 mm), plein veau porphyre de l'époque, dos lisse richement orné de compartiments fleuronnés et cloisonnés, coiffes filetées, triples filets d'encadrement sur les plats, pièce de titre de maroquin bordeaux, coupes filetées, filet ondulé intérieur, tranches dorées, (4), viij, 85, (11) p., planche frontispice gravée. Première et unique édition sous ce titre, possédant faux-titre et titre: "Etrennes des esprits forts", un second titre: "Pensées philosophiques" à la même adresse, ainsi que la planche frontispice gravée en taille-douce de l'édition originale de 1746: "La vérité arrache le masque à la superstition" dans une version inversée en miroir. L'auteur des textes placés en introduction et en postface ("A Messieurs les esprits forts. Épître philosophique" et "Épître philosophique à un philosophe") n'a jamais été identifié. Ces textes n'ont été reproduits que dans l'édition des "Oeuvres philosophiques" de 1772. Cette édition serait imprimée en France selon David Adams et Jeroom Vercruysse qui se réfèrent à un arrêt de la cour du Parlement du 23 janvier 1759 condamnant l'ouvrage, et non en Hollande comme il avait été supposé jusqu'alors. "Ce livre mérite d'être considéré, vu les polémiques et les échos qu'il suscita, comme l'un des plus importants du XVIIIe siècle" (Wilson, 'Diderot', p. 47). (Adams, 'Diderot', II, PD10. Niklaus, 'Pensées philosophiques', Droz, 1965, Et, p. 53. Tchemerzine-Scheler, II, p. 920. Vercruysse, 'Recherches bibliographiques sur les "Pensées Philosophiques" de Diderot', "18e siècle", 1972/4, p. 374-378). Le Catalogue Collectif en France ne recense que trois exemplaires de cette édition: BM Rouen, Versailles et Biblio. Mazarine. Elle manque à la BnF. Bel exemplaire, grand de marges, très frais, très bien relié à l'époque.

Rouen, Aux depens de la Compagnie, 1747. In-12, plein veau marbré de l'époque, dos à nerfs fleuronnés et cloisonnés, pièce de titre de veau havane, roulette sur les coupes, tranches jaspées, 251, (21) p. dont un faux-titre et deux titres. Edition originale de cette réfutation des 'Pensées philosophiques' de Diderot dans laquelle l'auteur dispose le texte intégral de Diderot et sa propre réfutation en regard, page à page. Le faux-titre: "Pensées philosophiques et pensées chrétiennes, mises en parallèle ou en opposition" est suivi de deux pages de titre: celle des 'Pensées philosophiques', à l'adresse et à la date de l'édition originale («La Haye, aux dépens de la Compagnie, 1746»), face à celle des Pensées chrétiennes. Cette réfutation est l'oeuvre du pasteur lausannois Georges P.G. Polier de Bottens (1675-1759). Issu d'une famille renommée de Lausanne, il était docteur en théologie morale et devint professeur et recteur de l'Académie de sa ville. Adversaire résolu des Lumières, il avait pourtant pour neveu Antoine Noé Polier de Bottens, ami et correspondant de Voltaire et auteur de plusieurs articles pour l Encyclopédie. (Adams, PD16, II, p.286. Tchemerzine-Scheler, II, p. 918-919). Un dernier feuillet de catalogue annoncé par une réclame («CA») n'est pas présent. Ce catalogue manque également à l'exemplaire de la BnF, à celui décrit par Tchemerzine, ainsi qu'à l'ensemble des exemplaires recensés au WorldCat. Il n'a probablement jamais été inséré. Bon exemplaire, très frais, bien relié à l'époque.
Aux Indes, chez Bedihuldgemale [i.e. Paris, Durand], 1748. In-12 (157 x 93 mm), broché, couverture de papier gris d'attente, 65 p., (7) p. de table, titre compris. Edition clandestine attribuée par Robert Niklaus à l'éditeur parisien Laurent Durand ou à l'un de ses associés. "Le premier pas philosophique de Diderot, qui lui ouvrit brillamment la carrière de celui qui allait devenir un des plus grands philosophes du siècle des Lumières". "Ce livre mérite d'être considéré, vu les polémiques et les échos qu'il suscita, comme l'un des plus importants du XVIIIe siècle" (Wilson, 'Diderot', p. 47). L'ouvrage fut immédiatement condamné par un arrêt du Parlement de Paris. (Adams, PD6. Niklaus, 'Pensées philosophiques', Droz,1965, P4, p. 51). Papier un peu bruni. Bon exemplaire.
