Taschenbuch. Etat : Neu. nach der Bestellung gedruckt Neuware - Printed after ordering - During the last three decades, a tremendous interest in new tailored materials called the Photonic Band Gap (PBG) materials has been generated and emerged as a new multidisciplinary field of study. In one dimension, these materials are composed of thin dielectric materials, semiconductor or metals surrounded by air or other materials of lower refractive index in order to confine the light wave. These structures exhibit frequency bands where electromagnetic waves cannot propagate. Photonic crystals (when they exhibit photonic band gap(s), they are known as PBG materials) are optical materials with periodic changes in the dielectric constant in one-, two- and three-dimensions.

Taschenbuch. Etat : Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -During the past two and half decades, light propagation in complex structures has aroused considerable interest of many investigators. Early work of E. Yablonovitch and his co-workers and also by S. John stimulated tremendously the interest of many researchers, who suggested that diffraction by periodic structures might lead to a photonic insulator in which propagation of light is forbidden in a certain range of frequencies. These photonic insulators are known as Photonic Band Gap (PBG) structures have a large number of applications in the field of photonics and integrated optics. Many applications in optics and microwaves are emerging by using the concept of PBG materials and structures. This new exciting structures and materials are currently under investigation in many laboratories worldwide. 168 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Etat : Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Photonic band gap crystals offer unique ways to tailor light and the propagation of electromagnetic waves. In analogy to electrons in a crystal, EM waves propagating in a structure with a periodically-modulated dielectric constant are organized into photonic bands separated by gaps in which propagating states are forbidden. Proposed applications of such photonic band gap crystals, operating at frequencies from microwave to optical, include zero- threshold lasers, low-loss resonators and cavities, and efficient microwave antennas. Spontaneous emission is suppressed for photons in the photonic band gap, offering novel approaches to manipulating the EM field and creating high-efficiency light-emitting structures. Photonic Band Gap Materials identifies three most promising areas of research. The first is materials fabrication, involving the creation of high quality, low loss, periodic dielectric structures. The smallest photonic crystals yet fabricated have been made by machining Si wafers along (110), and some have lattice constants as small as 500 microns. The second area is in applications. Possible applications presented are microwave mirrors, directional antennas, resonators (especially in the 2 GHz region), filters, waveguides, Y splitters, and resonant microcavities. The third area covers fundamentally new physical phenomena in condensed matter physics and quantum optics. An excellent review of recent development, covering theoretical, experimental and applied aspects. Interesting and stimulating reading for active researchers, as well as a useful reference for non-specialists.
