Hardcover. Etat : Very Good. In two volumes. Vol. I, lxxii+274 pp. Vol. II, viii+336 pp. with 75 illustrations, engraved by J. Orrin Smith, from drawings by John Gilbert. Bound in full red leather with a large gilt decorative panel on all boards, decorative spines with gilt vignette, titling etc, a.e.g. showing a little shelf wear, spines a little faded, gilt edges very fresh, internally tight bright and clean. A nice set of his works, but apparently scarce. this edition does not appear to be on Copac. Sir John Gilbert, 1817-1897 was an historical painter and illustrator. He was a major figure in the revival of wood engraving, and the first serious illustrator to tackle news illustrating for the Illustrated London News. He was a prolific and popular illustrator.

L'opera poetica di W. C. nella sua intierezza in questa edizione abbellita da illustrazioni n.t. e finalini in xilografia. Grande poeta romantico inglese, nato nel 1731 e morto nel 1800, l'A. uno dei pilastri della poesia inglese. L'opera si presenta in belle condizioni interne, arricchita dalla messe iconografica davvero efficace ed interessante. Solo la legatura appare affaticata ed un poco lenta. Di scarsa reperibilit, notevole.

Bindings fine with slight rubbing only. Contents clean and tight, minimal spotting to page edges and front/rear blanks, otherwise unmarked, no inscriptions. A fine tight and handsome set, more than suitable as gift to celebrate an important occasion. Size: 8vo (14 x 20cm). Book.

Covers somewhat splayed, as vellum is wont to do. Each volume has a well-executed fore edge painting. Vol. 1, Windsor Castle. Vol 2, Greenwich. Some foxing / spotting especially in first and last few pages in each volume. Inscribed in 1907 in an unknown hand in Vol. 1 to Lady Constance Swift, daughter of the largest landholder in England. 274 and 336 pages. All illustrations present. 5 x 8 inches.
