NADAL, B.H. FRIENDSHIP AND OTHER POEMS. NY: Robert J. Shores, 1916. 12mo., blue cloth, stamped in gilt; 60 pages. First Edition. Nadal was an occasional resident at author Upton Sinclair's Helicon Home Colony- an experimental community established in Englewood, New Jersey in 1906. The building burned down in 1907 and Nadal helped Sinclair save some of the residents- who jumped into a blanket held by the two men. Signed inscription from Nadal on the front endpaper: "Compliments of the Author, B.H. Nadal, Nat. Arts Club, 15 Gramercy Park, N.Y." Also with a one-page autograph letter signed by Nadal laid in, on The National Arts Club stationery, no date but apparently to "Miss Wells"- with her name on a rather tattered envelope. The letter apparently deals with a play by Nadal ("Woodmites"?) that was taken by actor, playwright and producer Arnold Daly to a Mr. Tyler who "says only cost prevents his putting it on." He writes that Mr. DeKoven has offered to write the music for the production and continues about other aspects of the play and possible actors for roles. Very Good (bright covers with minor wear; contents clean & tight). $250.00.

Hardcover. Etat : Very Good. R. B. Gruelle (illustrateur). Two-tone green cloth with titles stamped in gilt. 90 pages with 6 illustrations. Matching dates (1891) to title and copyright pages, but 1897 to the publisher's catalogue at the rear. With a 30-line handwritten poem entitled "Spring" and the author's initials (JWR) to the verso of the front endpaper and the half-title. The poem is actually an early version of "When the Green Gits Back in the Trees". The poem would be added to later editions of this work, but does not appear in this volume. This version has "In the spring" in the first line, as opposed to "In spring" in the published version. Several words in this version were changed in the published version to reflect Riley's use of dialect. For example, Riley's use of the word "swet" in line 24 of the published version is "sweat" here. This copy does list "The Flying Islands of the Night" in the author's box. The publisher's catalogue has 21 pages, with the final entry for publications of the Indiana Historical Society. Riley's volumes are listed to "Armazindy" (1894). CONDITION: The cloth is lightly worn at the extremities, with a 1/4" scuff at the heel. The paper has mild toning, and the half-title is detached and laid in. It has two small chips which do not affect any of the lettering or writing. This page carries the last third of the handwritten poem and the author's initials. Former owner's name to the front endpaper; two small clippings affixed to the last page of the text. Otherwise a clean, tight copy. The half-title being detached is the probable result of handling the poem. Quite possibly a unique copy. Size: 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. Signed by Author(s).

First edition, first printing, BAL's binding B; small 8vo, pp. ix, [5], 90; 6 plates (2 in color) and 1 full-p. illus. by Will Vawter; t.e.g, orig. maroon and tan cloth, gilt-lettered on spine and upper cover; extremities rubbed, title-p. loosening; all else good and sound; 1/4 red morocco slipcase. This copy signed on the title-p. "James Whitcomb Riley" and with a presentation on the front free endpaper "To Eugene Field, with hale Hoosier greetings James Whitcomb Riley," with the drawing of a naked boy on a river bank just above the inscription; additionally, the title-p. is also signed "Eugene Field, Chicago, Sept. 14, 1895" [3 days prior to the earliest presentation noted by BAL, and less than 2 months before Field died]. Laid in is a letter to a woman in St. Paul from Eugene Field, Jr. stating "This signed copy of "Neighborly Poems" bearing the signatures of James Whitcomb Riley and Eugene Field, my father, courses direct from the Eugene Field estate." The letter is certainly original; the rest rather likely forgeries of Henry Dayton Sickles. BAL 16576.
