Livre
Hardcover. Etat : Very Good. The Practice of Sustained Births of a Large Number of Observations. Contemporary mottled calf with five raised bands and gilt titles to spine, 7 1/2 x 5 inches, [20],368 pages, 8 engraved plates, no author portrait at frontis and perhaps lacking a front free endpaper; occasional spots wearing through at extremities, three tiny worm holes at top of rear board, one at tail of spine and another slightly larger at head of front joint, some writing scribbled out at top edge of title page, brief inked notation in rear, pages show standard browning and waving as typical of books of this age, a couple of handwritten corrections to text: for example, the word "humeur" has been lined out and "tumeur" has been written next to it in the margin. Overall the book is remarkably clean and sound. Paul Portal was a renowned obstetrician in his day, and he made some ground-breaking observations. His most important contribution to the field of midwifery was likely his recognition of placenta previa and practices for its management. The book consists of more than 80 personal observations in obstetrics with detailed descriptions of problem cases. The plates show monstrous and deformed fetuses. A wonderfully well preserved early medical textbook!.

Couverture rigide. Etat : Bon. 1 vol. in-4, front., (6), (15), (1 bl), 440, (20) pp., 13 planches h.t et 19 fig. dans le texte ; (8), 204 pp., 4 planches h.t. ; 34 pp. Pleine basane de l'époque restaurée, quelques rousseurs. Bon exemplaire.

8vo, pp. (xx), 368, fine engraved frontispiece portrait of the author holding a copy of his book, and 8 engraved plates. Signature removed from upper corner of title by bleaching, single small wormhole in lower blank corner almost throughout, plates a little browned, a few minor marks. Contemporary mottled calf, rebacked using the original morocco label, spine gilt. FIRST EDITION. G&M 6148. Portal was the first to appreciate the situation in placenta praevia, and had a clear insight into the actual findings and management of that entity, which is probably his most important contribution to the science of midwifery. He also demonstrated that version could be done with one foot, and taught that face presentation usually ran a normal course. Portal was a pupil of Mauriceau, and worked with him in the Hôtel Dieu. This important and eminently practical treatise was based on his personal experiences and observations. The plates depict abnormal and monstrous foetuses. See Cutter & Viets pp. 81?83.
