XX [From the dust jacket flaps] the spectacle of prehistoric art leaves us with a disturbing sense of an encounter, fugitive and intense, with another world. It is a feeling no one can escape. The hoary wild herd is strangely familiar to us - Red bison, great black bulls, rows of little horses, long haired mammoths -- lost in the night of the now famous caves of Altamira and Lascaux, like a message from the bottom of the ages. The time has come to place this art and to define it- recognizing clearly the limitations of our knowledge and interpretation. During the past decade much has been written on the analysis and interpretation of prehistoric art. The illustrations in this volume survey classic masterpieces of the great ages of Paleolithic culture, with new and beautiful reproductions in color. The text examines not only the classic theories of their meaning, based on hunting magic and analogies to contemporary studies of primitive peoples, but also the provocative writings of the new French scholars who have applied data processing techniques through their studies of the mysterious signs and figures of man's earliest known works of the imagination. P. M. Grand, a French prehistorian and a former student of the Abbé Breuil, also discusses the techniques and dating of the known objects of prehistoric art of the Paleolithic period including engraving, sculpture and art mobilier as well as cave painting. She describes, compares and traces the influences of the styles and apparent purposes of rock painting and carving of Africa and Australia, with its long tradition reaching into historic times, as well as the art of the French and Spanish caves and the Mediterranean region.
