First editions of all three volumes of Jane Austen's second novel and most popular. Octavo, three volumes, bound in contemporary three quarter calf over marbled boards with gilt titles to the spine. In very good condition. Armorial bookplates to each pastedown. Period gift inscription from the year of publication to the title page of Vol. I.: "Mary Anne King given her by her mother April 1813." An exceptional example of this landmark work in English literature, rare and desirable bound in contemporary calf. Pride and Prejudice was written between October 1796 and August 1797 when Jane Austen was not yet twenty-one. After an early rejection by the publisher Cadell, who had not even read it, Austen's novel was finally bought by Egerton in 1812 for £110. It was published in late January 1813 in a small edition of approximately 1500 copies and sold for 18 shillings in boards. Volume I of the first edition was printed by Roworth and Volumes II and III by Sidney, and their imprints appear both on the versos of the half titles and at the end of the text of each volume In a letter to her sister Cassandra on 29 January 1813, Austen writes of receiving her copy of the newly publishing novel (her "own darling child"), and while acknowledging its few errors, she expresses her feelings toward its heroine as such: "I must confess that I think her as delightful a creature as ever appeared in print, & how I shall be able to tolerate those who do not like her at least, I do not know." Gilson A3; Grolier English 69; Keynes 3; Sadleir 62b. With a contemporary ink gift inscription to volume one, "Mary Anne King given her by her mother. April 1813" to title, Campbell family bookplate to pastedowns. Lacking the half-titles. With volume one lacking text f. F9 (pp. 113-114).

First editions of all three volumes of Jane Austenâ s masterpiece, her bestselling book during her lifetime which remains a landmark of English literature. 12mo, three volumes bound in full mottled calf with gilt titles and elaborate gilt tooling to the spine, double gilt ruling and botanical gilt scrolling to the front and rear panels, gilt turn-ins, all edges speckled black. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box with gilt titles and elaborate gilt tooling to the spine. A very attractive example of this significant work in English literature. Originally titled First Impressions, Pride and Prejudice was written between October 1796 and August 1797 when Jane Austen was not yet twenty-one, the same age, in fact, as her fictional heroine Elizabeth Bennet. After an early rejection by the publisher Cadell who had not even read it, Austen's novel was finally bought by Egerton in 1812 for £110. It was published in late January 1813 in a small edition of approximately 1500 copies and sold for 18 shillings in boards. â The size of the edition is not knownâ ¦ perhaps 1500 copiesâ ¦ The first edition was sold off very rapidly and a second one was printed in the same yearâ (Keynes, 8). A novel of manners, the story follows the character development of young Elizabeth Bennet, an independent young lady who learns about the repercussions of hasty judgments and comes to appreciate the difference between superficial goodness and actual goodness. â Elizabethâ s own energy and defiance of character respond to Rousseauâ s and the popular notion of the pliant, submissive female. None of her novels delighted Jane Austen more than Pride and Prejudiceâ ¦ She had given a rare example of fiction as a highly intelligent formâ ¦ This remains her most popular and widely translated novelâ (Honan, 313-20). Pride and Prejudice has consistently appeared near the top of lists of "most-loved books" among literary scholars and the reading public. It has become one of the most popular novels in English literature, with over 20 million copies sold, and has inspired many derivatives in modern literature. For more than a century, dramatic adaptations, reprints, unofficial sequels, films, and televised versions of Pride and Prejudice have portrayed the memorable characters and themes of the novel, reaching mass audiences. The most popular film adaptations include the 1995 BBC television adaptation starring Colin Firth as Mr. Darcy and Jennifer Ehle as Elizabeth Bennet and the 2005 film directed by Joe Wright and starring Keira Knightley as Elizabeth Bennet and Matthew Macfadyen as Mr. Darcy. In very good condition. Title page of Vol. I supplied in facsimile and pages [1]-4 re-inserted and tipped in.

A very good copy, with some wear to the spine ends and joints superficially refurbished. Some spotting to the preliminary leaves, but generally clean. First edition of Jane Austen's final published work, pairing Northanger Abbey, probably the first full-length novel she wrote, with Persuasion, her last completed novel. Her brother Henry's biographical notice, dated 13 December 1817, is the first acknowledgement of Austen's authorship of her novels to appear in one of her works. Gilson A9, Keynes 9.

Hardcover. Etat : Very Good. 3rd Edition. Published by T. Egerton, London; 1817. Third Edition. 2 vols bound as 1. 12mo. Condition: Very Good. Provenance: From the library of David Gilson and Chris Viveash, renowned Jane Austen bibliographers and scholars. 2 volumes bound as 1 in contemporary brown cloth binding, appearing to be a remainder binding, of which only 2 are know (Gilson p.42). Title in gilt to the spine. There is some rubbing and soiling to the binding and the spine has been re-backed with the original spine relaid, with a little loss of the original spine at the foot. Inside, there is some spotting, and old water staining to the lower margins throughout, although the pages are in remarkably clean condition for a book of this age. The endpapers are somewhat soiled, with a few discreet and sympathetic repairs. The modern bookplate of Chris Viveash is affixed to the front pastedown, with a pencil annotation just above. Viveash has also added a purchase note in pencil to the rear pastedown. Jane Austen is perhaps the most famous British female author, known primarily for her six major novels, which interpret, critique, and comment upon the British landed gentry and their society at the end of the 18th century. Her biting irony, together with her realism and social commentary, have earned her acclaim among critics and scholars alike. Her novels have inspired many films, with new adaptations being produced even now, the last being Persuasion starring Dakota Johnson and currently showing on Netflix. Although it was the second to be published, Pride and Prejudice is perhaps the most famous and loved of all, a novel of manners, which follows Elizabeth Bennet, the dynamic protagonist, who discovers the repercussions of hasty judgements and learns the difference between superficial goodness and actual goodness. This novel has remained consistently near the top of lists of "most loved books" among both literary scholars and the reading public, with over 20 million copies sold, and has inspired many modern literary interpretations. For over a century, the memorable and much-loved characters and themes of the book have been portrayed in dramatic adaptations, reprints, unofficial sequels, films and tv adaptations. In all, although this book has some signs of age and wear, it is an incredibly rare find and, given the age, scarcity, and popularity of this novel, it is in excellent condition. Indeed, copies of any of the Egerton editions of Pride and Prejudice surviving in original condition are extremely rare. It is a particularly rare find with provenance such as this example, from the personal library of Chris Viveash and David Gilson. Viveash was a member of the Jane Austen Society for nineteen years and published over 35 articles on the life and works of Jane Austen. His partner, David Gilson was the leading Jane Austen scholar and bibliographer, and the first port of call for anyone researching the novelist. Without a doubt, no rare book collection would be complete without this title included on the shelves, and this book offers the exciting opportunity to add this beloved title together with its special provenance to your collection.

I, pp. xxiv, 300; [iv], 331, [i]; [iv], 280; [iv], 308; 12mo, modern tan calf, gilt spines with raised bands and morocco labels, very good. Northanger Abbey, the first of Austen's novels to be written, but which languished at Crosbie and Co. for 13 years before being bought back in 1816, published posthumously here with her final novel, Persuasion.
