Some slight edge wear to top and bottom of jacket and spine, corners slightly rubbed, some faint scratches to mid front jacket, price clipped and price replaced with publisher's sticker (£8.95), no inscriptions, internally clean tight and square, overall a vg+ copy for its age. 337pp, illustrated, illustrated endpapers. British journalist, tv presenter and biographer Shelley Rohde (1933-2007), moved to Manchester in the 1960s as a reporter for the Daily Mail and a presenter on Granada Television. She began to investigate the local artist L. S. Lowry (Laurence Stephen Lowry, 1877-1976), and was eventually to become an acknowledged expert on him. Her documentary on him, 'L.S. Lowry: A Private View', was made after she had interviewed the artist personally, which she did several times during his later life. This was in itself an achievement, given that Lowry was known to be difficult to pin down to an interview appointment and to any clear content and was inclined to amuse himself by making up stories. He first told Rohde he had given up painting long ago, but it was noticed that the paint on a canvas was wet. It later became the basis for this book.

Sir John Rothenstein says in his forword to this book " Miss Rohde's book offers a comprehensive account of Lowry's character, lafe and art. It constitutes the most detailed description of Lowry so far produced or likely to be". Fascinating study of an unusual but highly talented man who confounded the Manchester art establishment by becoming one of the most significant painters of the 20th century. Lowry's work is now among the most collectable of his era. The most impressive thing about Lowry, apart from his pictures, was his determination to live life his way. He was never fazed by success and always insisted he was not an artist, but 'a man who paints.' He was a solitary but amiable figure who was instinctively creative, making images from the unpromising terrain of the urban north. 'I don't know why I do it. There doesn't seem any point to it,' he said. Ref CC 3.
