Amsterdam, Gerard Valck, c. 1700. Large oblong etching. Bacchanal. In center a satyr with a penis sheath is surrounded by dancing nymphs. A person behind him is holding up a portrait of a man. To the left a nymph squeezes grape juice in the mouth of a satyr, another nymph playing the tambourine. Classical buildings in the background. In lower right corner signed in the plate "F. Ertinger sc.", at bottom "Remond la Fage fecit", "plate number "28", "a Amsterdam chez Gerard Valck avec previlege." 29,4 x 45,8 cm.*I.F.F. not described. From a rare series of six plates representing bacchanalian and erotic scenes. Cf. I.F.F., IV, 104, Nos. 203-208 for a possibly other state. The printmaker and painter Franz or François Ertinger, born in Weil in Schwaben Germany, was mainly active in Flanders and France; 1677-1678 he was master of the St. Luke Guild in Antwerp; he probably travelled to Rome; from 1685 he lived in Paris where he died. Raymond Lafage or La Fage prolific draughtsman and also etcher, worked in Toulouse, Paris, Rome, travelled to the Netherlands and died according to some in 1684, to others in 1690. - Trimmed within border line; a few small tears, mainly in blank parts, repaired; a few brown spots.[(6004)].
