Couverture rigide. Etat : Assez bon. Edition originale. ---- "The close interweaving of science with epistemology, as well as of metaphysics with theology, is very prominent in BERKELEY's last major work, Siris, which begins as an investigation of the medicinal virtues of tar water and ends with a disquisition on platonic philosophy. The body of the book consists, on the one hand, of a discussion of contemporary chemical theory and, on the other, of a critique of newtonian principles of explanation, of space and time and of the true interpretation of the concept of causation. The sections on chemistry are of particular interest, for they display considerable acquaintance with most of the major chemical doctrines of BERKELELY's period (e.g., Boerhaave, Homberg, Hales, Lemery, etc.), including a discussion of acids, salts, alkalies and air that leads to a discussion of fire and light, the latter providing a "bridge" to a spiritual interpretation of all phenomena. Siris thus involves an attempt to assimilate newtonian concepts to the pre complex phenomena of chemistry and animal physiology. BERKELEY's general influence extended to such writters as HUME, MACLAURIN and KANT in the eighteenth century and MILL, HELMHOLTZ and MACH in the nineteenth. He also anticipated many of the ideas of twentieth-century philosophers of science". (DSB II pp. 16/18) ---- Heirs of Hippocrates N° 805 & Cole N° 113 (english ed.) - Partington II p. 506**394/o3.

Cfr.

"Jessop noted that the catalogue of the Surgeon-Geneeral's Library, Washington, attributes the translation to D. R. Bouiller. The translator suppressed Berkelery title, Siris, etc., explaining in his preface that he thought it misleading and too obscure for the generality of his readers. He stated that he used as the source of his text the 'third edition', that is presumably, the second Dublin edition; he had also profited by manuscript corrections and additions, which the author had supplied" (Keynes). Jessop 184. Keynes 73. The translation was reviewed in Acta Eruditorum (Leipzig, 1746).

Edition originale
First edition in French of Siris, a Chain of philosophical Reflections and Enquiries concerning the Virtues of Tar-water (1744) and of Berkeley's two letters on the subject to Thomas Prior. 'In 1744 appeared one of [Berkeley's] most controversial works. Siris is a reconciliation of medicine with metaphysics, best known for its advocacy of the medicinal value of tar water, a native American preventative distilled from pine resins. Having conducted his own experiments Berkeley made specific claims for its beneficial effect in alleviating fevers, gout, scurvy, and dropsy. In trying to understand the cosmical principles that might explain this he conceived the possibility, which others took up with greater alacrity, that its properties might be those of a universal panacea, operating as condensed light. Siris had exceptional sales, primarily as a home medicine guide, for a few years and was translated into most western European languages, but its medical claims also provoked criticism' (Oxford DNB).Siris is, however, more than just a medical work and the consideration of tar-water led Berkeley into a lengthy chain of reflections on the principles of the universe and of divine providence. 8vo (164 × 91mm.), pp. xxiv, 343, [1]. Woodcut ornaments. Contemporary calf, gilt panelled spine with flower tools, red morocco label. Small chip to head of spine. An excellent copy, clean and crisp in a nice contemporary binding. [Blake p. 43; Wellcome II, p. 149; Rochedieu p. 23.].

[ENGLISH DESCRIPTION ON DEMAND] XXIV 343pp.
