This is one of only 750 copies printed in May 1940. Frontispiece. 220 illustrations. Ownership stamp of Juan Orrego Salas, noted winner of the National Art Award in Chile on FEP. This copy is VG to VG+. Front cover has a small (dime sized) damp stain to front, a tiny closed tear to back upper spine, and a bit of overall rubbing/sunning. Inside is unmarked , firmly bound, and evenly/modestly toned.

Seminal and fundamental work on the subject, this was Kubler's first book, a doctoral thesis at Yale. Text is 159 pages, followed by 219 b/w photos, usually several per page, as well as plans of the churches described. Dust jacket has some tears and a small piece missing. Fine copy in very good dust jacket.

It is the first work in which the monuments are analyzed and classified according to their architectural aspect alone, examining in detail the emplacement, materials, structure, and decoration of these churches. (Original wrappers and text in excellent condition, no defects; tiny former owner signature on upper edge of first free flyleaf).
