Edition originale
Illustrated with 11 original watercolours with manuscript page insertion numbers. First edition and probably a unique deluxe/bespoke copy. Small 8vos., I: title, [1p.], pp-4-151, [1p.]. II: title, [1p.], pp-4-157, [1p.]. III: title, pp-4-146. IV: title, [1p.], pp-4-157, [1p.], watercolours unsigned. Rebound in the twentieth-century into full scarlet morocco, titles in gilt on white labels on spines, with new endpapers and blanks, erotic pictorial bookplate in first volume with bibliographical pencil notes in rear. London, n.p. [ [William Lazenby], 1873-1876. £5,750.00 A nice set, two titlepages a trifle foxed, the plates in near pristine condition, binding very slightly marked on a few volumes. Possibly rebound without the two unnumbered errata leaves from volume 4 collated by Ashbee in Catena Librorum Tacendorum. Very rare on the market, considered to be one of only three known copies including this one (Mendes) and extremely rare in accessible libraries with no copies in Houghton, KVK, the BL copy only in Worldcat i.e Kearney 1590 who describes it as '.a collection of tales by various hands, edited to form a continuous narrative.' (p-298) and mentions no watercolour plates. Ashbee p-183 who noted that 150 or so copies were 'struck off' '. but as, at the death of the gentleman for whom the book was printed, the greater part of the edition was still undistributed, it was destroyed, so that perhaps not more than twenty copies are now in existence'. He also briefly notes the book in his Bibliotheca Arcana (194) attributing it to [Edward] Sellon. Not in Mendes who felt that there might have been more than 20 copies of this edition left as the title was being advertised as being for sale with 12 drawings in 1873 and after (or perhaps it was reset/copied by Lazenby). Provenance: the erotic exlibris bookplate of 'T.F.' in the first volume depicting a Masonic styled vagina. The pencil notes in rear by Max Salomon (who acquired the set in 1959. He considers this extra- illustrated or deluxe copy to be a unicum) thence [?] toTony Fekete. A classic of clandestinely published Victorian erotic literature with contemporary illustrations that ranks somewhere just below Lazenby's printing of ?The Pearl' in terms of rarity. Ashbee noted that the book ?'consists of several tales, orient pearls at random strung," woven into a connected narrative by a gentleman, perfectly well known to the present generation of literary eccentrics and collectors, as having amassed one of the most remarkable collections of erotic pictures and bric-a-brac ever brought together'' (p-188). Mendes also considers it to be a 'round-robin' type of book and that Ashbee's 'pearls' were probably the collective work of Simpson, Edward Bellamy, James Campbell Reddie, George Augustus Sala and that the 'bric a brac' collector Richard Monckton Miles, The Baron Hougton. probably strung them together. The final 26 pages of the last volume are a series of '.letters produced in the Divorce Case Cavendish v. Cavendish and Rochfoucault. They are 12 in number, and were written by the young Count DE LA ROCHEFOUCAULT, in 1859, while attaché to the French Embassy at Rome. No pen can adequately depict their nasty licentiousness; and it would appear from allusions they contain that those from the lady to whom they were addressed were still worse' (op cit Ashbee). These are described by Simpson in the text as:'Too horribly scandalous to be read in court'. The very transgressive plot is illustrated by a series of rapidly executed watercolours within pencilled boxes. They include contemporary binding numbers and were presumably commissioned for Lazenby's books by one of his outwardly respectable erotobibliophile gentlemen collectors who lived in Victorian London. This is probably the only publicly documented copy or even the last remaining set or perhaps the only illustrated set. The images include, Miss Evelyn (a governess) caning the improbably endowed narrator Charlie Roberts' sister who i.
