Fine-looking exemplar of the First English Edition, the true First Edition having been published in 1970 in France by Editions Gallimard. This edition translated from the original French by Peter Green. From the personal library of the noted English historian of Ancient Greece and Ancient Rome, Professor Peter Morris Green, now of Iowa City, Iowa, 99 years old, nearly blind, but still working, in this case on a new translation and with annotations, of Herodotus, his favorite historian. Big, tall, quarto format hardcover cover, bound in original publisher's red linen cloth over boards, gilt lettering over black label at spine. Fine, sharply gilt-stamped publisher logo (two dolphins swimming) to front cover. Clean but for some former owner ink-stamps, including along bottom edge, first free endpaper, inside front flap, unobtrusive, else tightly bound, unmarked. Full-color frontis, full-page, and many, many score black-and-white and some full-color illustrations. 451 illustrations all in, 91 in full-color, 13 architectural plans. Sewn-in linen ribbon bookmark. Volume contains scholarly apparatus in the form of, e.g., notes, index, and bibliography. x, [1] 437 [1], pp. plus a folding mapMember, I.O.B.A., C.B.A., and adherent to the highest ethical standards. First edition, profusely illustrated --- From the library of Rodman Robinson Henry, with his bookplate on the front pastedown. A decorated World War II veteran, Professor Henry worked at Harvard University's Fogg Museum of Art and earned his Ph.D. in Art History from Boston College in 1959. While working toward his doctoral degree, Dr. Henry began teaching at Pine Manor College. He remained at the college until his retirement in 1995, at age 70. He also served as an adjunct professor at Northeastern University, Wentworth Institute, and Boston University. Dr. Henry received many honors and awards in his lifetime, including the Clara Torrey Clement/Rodman R. Henry Professional Chair in Art History, which was established at Pine Manor College in 1987. Professor Henry bequeathed his collection of original art and reference library to the Berkshire Museum. A handsome copy with a distinguished provenance.
