Zweite, vermehrte und verbesserte Auflage, ist "ein Muster populärer Darstellung medicinischer Fragen, eine der ersten Stellen unter den zahlreichen, diesen Gegenstand behandelnden und damals erschienenen Schriften einnimmt." August Hirsch Karl v. Peufer (1806-), "Arzt, Sohn von Christian P., Arzt und ehemaligem Professor der Medicin an der Universität in Bamberg, ist daselbst am 22. December 1806 geboren. Er hatte zuerst in Erlangen, später in Würzburg Medicin studirt, nach abgelegtem Examen längere Zeit als Assistent in der Schönlein'schen Klinik fungirt und war hier 1831 mit einer, das gewöhnliche Maaß akademischer Dissertationen weit überragenden Schrift "Beiträge zur Geschichte des Petechialtyphus" promovirt worden. - Mit einem Stipendium von der baierischen Regierung ausgestattet, machte er im Herbste desselben Jahres eine Reise nach Norddeutschland, um die daselbst epidemisch herrschende Cholera zu studiren (der Bericht über die Resultate seiner Beobachtungen ist in der Beilage zu Nr. 19 der baierischen Annalen vom Jahre 1833 veröffentlicht), und habilitirte sich darnach in München als praktischer Arzt. - Bei dem Ausbruche der Cholera im J. 1836 in Baiern wurde er als Regierungscommissar nach dem von der Krankheit heimgesuchten Orte Mittenwald zur Bekämpfung der Seuche geschickt und im September des folgenden Jahres erhielt er eine Anstellung als Landgerichtsarzt in der Münchener Vorstadt Au. - Im J. 1840 folgte er einem Rufe als Professor der medicinischen Klinik nach Zürich an Stelle seines nach Berlin abgegangenen Lehrers Schönlein, 1844 siedelte er in gleicher Eigenschaft, und zwar gemeinsam mit seinem Freunde und Züricher Collegen Henle, nach Heidelberg über, verweilte hier acht Jahre und übernahm dann (1852) die klinische Professur an der zweiten medicinischen Abtheilung im allgemeinen Krankenhause in München, mit welcher ihm gleichzeitig die Stellung des ärztlichen Referenten im Ministerium des Innern übertragen worden war. Auf dem Heimwege von einer Erholungsreise, welche er im Sommer 1869 mit seiner Familie nach Pertisau (am Achensee) unternommen hatte, erlitt P. einen Schlaganfall, der seinem an praktischen Erfolgen reichen Leben am 13. September ein plötzliches Ende machte. - P. gehört zu den bedeutendsten Schülern Schönlein's und den würdigsten Vertretern der von demselben wesentlich geförderten neuesten Phase in der wissenschaftlichen Entwickelung der deutschen Medicin, das größte Verdienst um sein engeres Vaterland aber hat er sich, neben seinen hochgeschätzten Leistungen als klinischer Lehrer und praktischer Arzt, durch die Reformen erworben, welche er in dem baierischen Medicinalwesen herbeigeführt und mit welchen er viele veraltete Vorurtheile und Mißstände überwunden hat; nach 12jährigen Bemühungen war es ihm gelungen, die Freigebung der ärztlichen Praxis in Baiern zu erzielen und viele neuere wichtige Verordnungen, so u. a. über die obligatorische Schutzpockenimpfung, über den Gifthandel, sind sein Werk. - Die litterarische Thätigkeit Pfeufer's ist eine sehr beschränkte geblieben; außer den oben genannten Arbeiten hat er einen "Bericht über die Cholera-Epidemie in Mittenwald" (1837), sodann eine kleine Schrift "Zum Schutze wider die Cholera" (1849, in 3. Aufl. 1854), welche, ein Muster populärer Darstellung medicinischer Fragen, eine der ersten Stellen unter den zahlreichen, diesen Gegenstand behandelnden und damals erschienenen Schriften einnimmt und eine weite Verbreitung gefunden hat, endlich mehrere Journalartikel meist praktischen Inhalts in der von ihm in Gemeinschaft mit Henle in den Jahren 1844-1869 herausgegebenen "Zeitschrift für rationelle Medicin" veröffentlicht. - Mit einem reichen poetischen Talente begabt, hat P., ein Freund des Dichters Platen und Erbe des litterarischen Nachlasses desselben, "Platens Tagebuch .
