Tall 8vo, (225mm), [10],54p. the half-title present and somewhat browned, with some slight browning thereafter. Modern Ingres paper wrappers, fore and tail edges untrimmed. (ESTC T47243) Hannah More's first significant work composed in her late teens. Originally published in Bristol in 1762, this pastoral verse drama for schoolgirls expresses her views on women's education and role in society. Speeches from archetypal female characters such as the fashionable Euphelia, the bookish Cleora, and the lazy Laurinda describe the various unhappinesses arising from a mistaken education, and it is left to the wise Urania to counsel her sex to cultivate the domestic virtues and to be 'Fearful of Fame, unwilling to be known' The play was performed at the Mores' school and, once republished in London in 1773, was eagerly bought by the public; over 10,000 copies had been sold by the mid-1780s and a twelfth edition appeared in 1800. Despite its huge contemporary success only a very few dozen copies are located on Estc and of this particular edition but eleven: 5 UK, 5 USA, and 1 Aus.

Small 8vo, 122 x 73 mms., pp. 198, engraved frontispiece, engraved vignette on title-page, contemporary straight-grain plum morocco wirh "H. Skinner." in gilt on front cover, gilt border on covers, gilt spine, no doubt an attractive binding at one time but now sadlly worn and rubbed, with top and base of spine dective. This was one of Hannah More's earliest publications, written when she was a teenager: "In her late teens Hannah More composed her first significant work, a pastoral verse drama for schoolgirls entitled The Search after Happiness, published in Bristol in 1762, in which she expresses her views on women's education and role in society. Speeches from archetypal female characters such as the fashionable Euphelia, the bookish Cleora, and the lazy Laurinda describe the various unhappinesses arising from a mistaken education, and it is left to the wise Urania to counsel her sex to cultivate the domestic virtues and to be 'Fearful of Fame, unwilling to be known' (H. The play was performed at the Mores' school and, once republished in London in 1773, was eagerly bought by the public; over 10,000 copies had been sold by the mid-1780s and a twelfth edition appeared in 1800" (Oxford DNB).

Original Wrappers. Etat : Very Good+ binding. Small 12mo. 72 pp., frontis. First authorized American edition. As issued, in stiff speckled wrappers. One page shows minor loss to the margin because it was printed on an imperfect sheetno loss of text; some ink smearing to that leaf only. Generally, this is a remarkably nice copy of an early American edition printed by Lydia Bailey. Bailey took over her husband Robert Bailey's print shop after his death in 1808 and ran in until she retired and closed the shop in 1861. Karen Nipps in her biographical sketch writes, "Bailey was the master printer of a shop that at its peak was one of the largest in the city, employing more than forty workers. . . . [S]he transformed her husband's floundering business into one of the busiest printing establishments in Philadelphia. Although previous generations of printers' widows had continued their husbands' careers, they had done so only long enough to remarry, have a mature son take over, or fold the business; Lydia Bailey made the business a success and never relinquished control of it" (Oxford American National Biography). For better than a half a century Bailey was a force with which to reckon. A beautiful example of an early imprint. Shaw & Shoemaker 23434; Nipps Checklist, 55; Hudak 24-30; Rosenback 442.

  • Four works in one volume, Sir Eldred bound last; all 8vo in fours, pp. [vi], 49, [1] advertisements; [viii], 87, [1] advertisements; viii, [ii], 57, [1] advertisements; vii, [i], 83, [1] advertisements; contemporary tree calf, nicely gilt spine, with morocco label (spine somewhat worn at head). The uncommon second edition of Hannah More's Sir Eldred of the Bower, to which Johnson contributed several revisions when he visited her early in January 1776. More recorded that he invited himself to drink tea with her, and that when they finished at about nine, they 'fell upon Sir Eldred: he read both poems through, suggested some little alterations in the first, and did me the honour to write one whole stanza'. He did not leave until midnight. H.W. Liebert, in his essay 'We Fell upon Sir Eldred' (New Light on Johnson, ed. F.W. Hilles, pp. 233-45), has suggested in detail the revisions that were due to Johnson: four stanzas are substantially rewritten, and eleven others are changed in part. They are reprinted in the Poems, ed. Nichol Smith and McAdam (Oxford, 1974), pp. 439-41. Decisive proof that at least some of those changes were his work surfaced only relatively recently, when a cutting of a stanza from the first edition, with his autograph alterations, was sold at Sotheby's London (lot 173, 19 July 1993): it is now in the Hyde Collection at Harvard. Fleeman 78ME/1 (pp. 1347-9). This revised edition is quite uncommon: ESTC online lists 25 copies, whereas there are almost three times as many of the first edition of 1776. Collections of these four works were presumably available in Cadell's shop in the late 1780s, because an almost identical volume (but with Fatal Falsehood in the third edition) passed through my hands some twenty years ago. Provenance. Inscription of J.C. Symonds, February 1808, on title page.
