Scott Moncrieff's translation of Proust's 'À la recherche du temps perdu' was the first English edition, published during the period when the original French was appearing. Just as the last volumes of the French appeared after Proust had died in 1922, the final volume of this set was published in 1931, translated by Stephen Hudson (a pseudonym of Sydney Schiff), Scott Moncrieff having died in 1930. Subsequent editions have departed from the titling and stylistic conventions used by Scott Moncrieff, but for at least a generation this was the definitive text, and is now considered a classic in its own right.
