Re-presents, in a modern Limited Edition format, Marcel Proust's "Swann's Way: In Search of Lost Time" in the classic English translation by C. K. Scott Moncrieff. Volume One of the author's masterpiece-sequence, "In Search of Lost Time" (1913). "The narrator is a sensitive young man who wishes to become a writer, whose identity is kept vague. As a child, his anxiety at leaving his mother at night and his attempts to force her to come and kiss him Good Night, culminates in a spectacular success, when his father suggests that his mother stay the night with him. The narrator's anxiety leads to manipulation, much like the manipulation employed by his invalid aunt Leonie and all the lovers in the entire book, who use the same methods of petty tyranny to manipulate and possess their loved ones. Marcel Proust's most prominent work, known both for its length and its theme of involuntary memory, the most famous example being the 'episode of the madeleine', which occurs early in the volume. While there is an array of symbolism in the work, it is rarely defined through explicit keys leading to moral, romantic, or philosophical ideas. The significance of what is happening is often placed within memory or the inner contemplation of what is described. This focus on the relationship between experience, memory, and writing, and the radical de-emphasis of the outward plot, have become staples of the modern novel, but were unheard-of in 1913" (C. K. Scott Moncrieff). An absolute "must-have" title for Marcel Proust collectors. This is a copy of the 1000 Copy Limited Edition, indicated as such in front and on the title page. This title is a great book. As far as we know, this is the only remaining copy of the Limited Edition available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright. A rare copy thus. One of the greatest writers of the 20th century. A fine copy. ISBN 1772263184. no.

Hardcover. Etat : Good. 1st Edition. A COMPLETE FIRST EDITION SET OF PROUST'S MASTERPIECE, IN THE CLASSIC SCOTT MONCRIEFF TRANSLATION. Published in 11 volumes by Chatto & Windus and Alfred A. Knopf between 1922 and 1931; all volumes are first edition, first impressions. Scott Moncrieff's translation of Proust's 'À la recherche du temps perdu' was the first English edition, published during the period when the original French was appearing. Just as the last volumes of the French appeared after Proust had died in 1922, the final volume of this set was published in 1931, translated by Stephen Hudson (a pseudonym of Sydney Schiff), Scott Moncrieff having died in 1930. Subsequent editions have departed from the titling and stylistic conventions used by Scott Moncrieff, but for at least a generation this was the definitive text, and is now considered a classic in its own right. A good set: scattered foxing to the text as usual, but not significant and the later volumes are generally clean throughout; discreet ownership inscriptions to most volumes; cloth of Guermantes Vol. 1 mottled; Swann's Way Vol. 1 with fading and wear to the spine; Time Regained with the scarce dust-jacket, spine of dj faded with a closed tear; personal ex libris plates to Swann's Way Vol. 2 and Time Regained; Chatto promotional flyer laid in to Time Regained. This early 20th-century work is his most prominent, known both for its length and its theme of involuntary memory. The most famous example of this is the "episode of the madeleine", which occurs early in the first volume. The novel gained fame in English translation by C. K. Scott Moncrieff as "Remembrance of Things Past", but the title "In Search of Lost Time", a literal rendering of the French, became ascendant after D. J. Enright adopted it for his revised translation published in 1992. "In Search of Lost Time" follows the narrator's recollections of childhood and experiences into adulthood in the late 19th-century and early 20th-century high-society France, while reflecting on the loss of time and lack of meaning in the world. The novel began to take shape in 1909. Proust continued to work on it until his final illness in the autumn of 1922 forced him to break off. Proust established the structure early on, but even after volumes were initially finished, he continued to add new material and edited one volume after another for publication. The last three of the seven volumes contain oversights and fragmentary or unpolished passages, as they existed only in draft form at the death of the author; the publication of these parts was overseen by his brother Robert.' (Wiki) ***Marcel Proust was best known for this 3200 page masterpiece, originally published as "A La Recherche du Temps Perdu", and first translated into English by C.K. Scott Moncrieff as "Remembrance of Things Past" - later revised in translation to "In Search of Lost Time". Semi-autobiographical, and written in a stream-of-consciousness style, W. Somerset Maugham called it "the greatest fiction to date". ***A complete set of the first edition in English of "Cities of the Plain", published in eleven volumes - all first impressions apart from "Cities of the Plain". With the additional resource volume "A Guide to Proust" in the dustwrapper. It is now extremely difficult to find a complete set of this important work. A beautiful set for the collector of the work of Marcel Proust and literary first editions. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.
