No Binding. Etat : Poor. Reissue. iv, 374pp. Disbound, for binding. First and last few leaves are significantly chipped at edges, and detached from text block. Outer leaves toned and lightly spotted. Backstrip cracked. Signatures loosening, with a couple of detached pages chipped and chapped at edges. A few manuscript marginal annotations in a contemporary hand, relevant to the text (such as naming characters alluded to in the text, or confirming dates of events etc). 12mo. A work first published in 1832, the title page of this reissue states "This is a faithful reprint of a work, which produced an extraordinary sensation on its first appearance fifty-one years ago, and was speedily suppressed. It is the same, too, for which the sum of a Thousand Pounds was offered in New York about nine years ago." In fact, the work is by Olivia Serres, a British painter and writer, also known as an imposter who claimed the title of Princess Olive of Cumberland. Serres was a friend of Lady Anne Hamilton. In 1832, Hamilton, a lady-in waiting to Queen Caroline, wrote 'The Authentic Records of the Court of England for the Last Seventy Years'. It contained may accusations of scandal and salaciousness, and her publisher, J Phillips was prosecuted and convicted for its publication. Phillips fled into exile. Serres then produced an expanded version of Hamilton's text, adding more scandals, accusations of financial malpractice and criminal activity, including murder, which was published in two volumes under the title 'The Secret History of the Court of England' and still credited to Lady Anne Hamilton. For her part, Lady Anne disclaimed the work. 'Secret History', as 'The Authentic Record' before it, was suppress in the UK but widely reprinted in the United States. Offered for rebinding or reference only, given the condition.

Hardcover. Etat : Very Good. This is a good-looking two volume set in rather remarkable condition, particularly given its age. You can take a look at the photographs to see that the covers have held up quite well. There is a little bit of color loss in volume 1 near the spine on the front and back. And the spines of both volumes have faded a little bit. The gilt design on the front covers is still quite bright. The gilt design and lettering on the spines is a little faded. Here are several very strong points with regard the condition of the volumes. 1) They are Very solidly bound, square and tight, there are no cracks or webbing anywhere. 2) The pages of the volumes are in excellent condition. There is a light amount of spotting on the inside covers and first front and rear end papers and after that there is absolutely none at all. There's no foxing to be found anywhere in the text of either volume. The pages are close to spotless. I leafed through and couldn't find any spots of soiling. And the pages are not darkened. Here's what I think: these volumes have been in bookcase retirement for over 100 years. The illustrations look perfect, the tissue guards (with descriptions printed in red) look perfect. The downside to this lack of use is that many pages were left uncut. So if you're going to take these books out of retirement and read them you're going to have to possess the skill of neatly opening them up. That's another skill I lack. I should point out that the top edges of the volumes are gilt, and the middle and bottom edges are deckled. You are probably able to see in the photographs that the top and bottom of the spines have some bending and creasing. The top of the spine of volume 2 has a spot of fraying. There are small dents in a few places along the edges of the covers. Surprisingly, there is no rub-through of the cloth at the corners. They are not worn. That's about it. Volume 1 is 393 pages long. Volume 2 is 400 pages long. I'm pricing the set low due to the many uncut pages.
