First Edition Thus. First Printing. Octavo (21cm); original glossy pictorial card wrappers; [2],xii,429,[3]pp. Inscribed by the author on the title page: "To Eli / Bobby Seale." Light surface wear, tiny indentation to upper spine, with a faint diagonal crease to upper left corner of rear wrapper; contents fresh; Near Fine. Reissue of the first book by the co-founder of the Black Panther Party, recorded by Arthur Goldberg while Seale was in San Francisco County Jail between November, 1969 and March, 1970. Seale describes the book in the foreword: "There have been a lot of misconceptions about the Black Panther Party. I wanted to write this book so people would have a better insight into the inner workings of the Party - what it really does, the kind of people who are in it, their everyday lives, and the things that have happened to the Party, so that people would have a proper understanding of the Black Panther Party." Contents cover the Chicago conspiracy case, New Haven Panther trial, issues with law enforcement, and his relationship with Huey P. Newton, with a new 3pp introduction by the author. [64006].

First edition of this memoir by one of the founders of the Black Panthers, with a focus on his trial as one of the "Chicago 8." This powerful and harrowing memoir was written during Bobby Seale's time in prison as one of the "Chicago 8" defendants. Due to Seale's protests against the blatant racism he and the seven other men faced during the trial, the judge ordered him to be bound and gagged for the duration - the shocking image of the restrained Seale adorns both the dust jacket and the binding of the book. An important firsthand account of the early days of the Black Panther Party for Self-Defense, and a clear manifesto for the organization's stance. 8.5'' x 5.75''. Original brown cloth binding with metallic red embellishment and spine lettering. Original unclipped ($6.95) color pictorial dust jacket, designed by Bob Antler with illustration by Howard Brodie. Fore-edge machine deckle. Jacket with light edgewear and spotting;.75" closed tear to rear joint. Binding spine ends lightly bumped. Light scattered foxing to edges. A sharp copy. Very good plus in very good dust jacket.
