First edition of Hayek's foundational study of cognitive behaviorâ ""an exercise in profound thinking." Octavo, original cloth. Near fine in a very good dust jacket. Introduction by Heinrich Kluver. The Sensory Order, first published in 1952, sets forth F. A. Hayek's classic theory of mind in which he describes the mental mechanism that classifies perceptions that cannot be accounted for by physical laws. "A most encouraging example of a sustained attempt to bring together information, inference, and hypothesis in the several fields of biology, psychology, and philosophy" (Quarterly Review of Biology).

With an Introduction by Heinrich Klüver. First UK edition. 8vo. xxii, 209, [1] pp. Original green cloth, spine lettered in silver, dust jacket (small bookseller's label to front pastedown, otherwise internally clean and unmarked; jacket slightly edge worn with some minor rubbing to tips of spine and corners, spine panel slightly toned and scuffed with tiny 4mm area of loss to middle, notwithstanding a very good copy). London, Routledge and Kegan Paul Limited. Hayek's second book after his move to Chicago, The Sensory Order is the final form of a thesis Hayek had developed in Vienna in the 1920s on philosophical psychology. Hayek argues that there are inherent limits to the human mind's capacity to understand itself, and that human beings know much more than they can ever explicitly explain. An American edition was published in Chicago in the same year with no established precedence. Cody & Ostyrem B-10.
