Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - The phase-field method is a powerful tool in computer-aided materials science as it allows for the analysis of the time-spatial evolution of microstructures on the mesoscale. A multi-phase-field model is adopted to run numerical simulations in two different areas of scientific interest: Polycrystalline thin films growth and the ferromagnetic shape memory effect. FFT-techniques, norm conservative integration and RVE-methods are necessary to make the coupled problems numerically feasible.

Coauthors, families, and colleagues enjoy a working vacation in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains of New Mexico, March 2006. As technical conversations on modeling, characterization and applications of shape memory alloys (SMAs) were blending with the view of the white snowy peaks surrounding Red River, New Mexico, it became clear to our research group that a consistent and comprehensive text on SMAs would be very helpful to future students interested in performing research in this eld. Many communication barriers could be eliminated and access to the subst- tial body of research discussed in the literature would be increased. In this way, a working vacation became the motivating factor behind a challenging research project. This book has been written with contributions from three of my current Ph.D. students, Luciano Machado, Parikshith Kumar and Darren Hartl, and three former Ph.D. students, Pavlin Entchev, Peter Popov and Bj orn Kiefer. These latter three coauthors were still members of the Shape Memory Alloy Research Team (SMART), or in close proximity, when we started the project of writing this book more than a year and a half ago. The work of a seventh former Ph.D. student, Siddiq Qidwai, is also included in this book. The task of putting forth a sequence of topics on shape memory alloys (SMAs) that VIII Preface forms a coherent learning path seemed natural, given the diversity of topics covered by their Ph.D. work.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Within this work is the presentation of a general 3D model capable of capturing the multiaxial behavior of superelastic shape memory alloys (SMAs) under quasi-static isothermal or dynamic loading conditions. A semi-analytical framework is developed to numerically implement the model. An extended experimental study is conducted on NiTi thin walled tubes to investigate the performance of the model. The proposed approach is shown to be able to capture the non-Mises thermomechanical response of NiTi under complex tension-torsion loading conditions. The effect of loading sequence and loading rate is also experimentaly studied. The main motivation of the present study is to develop a platform for analyzing and designing biomedical devices with SMA actuator under combined tension-torsion loading conditions. The torsional stiffness of NiTi is shown to be adjustable by applying an extra axial load. This will lead to developing desirable torque response in NiTi tubes and rods by varying the axial load. A possible application of this technique in the form of an assistive device is discussed. 68 pp. Englisch.

Etat : Neu. nach der Bestellung gedruckt Neuware - Printed after ordering - The interest in the mechanical behavior of shape memory alloys (SMAs) is rapidly growing with the increasing number of potential industrial applications. In most applications, SMAs experience general non-proportional thermo-mechanical loadings. Thus, according to experimental observations, the so-called variant reorientation should be considered in the constitutive model development. In this monograph, the SMA behavior under multiaxial loadings at small and finite deformations is investigated. It is shown that most available SMA models are basically the same under proportional loadings while they yield different results under non-proportional loading conditions. Based on the multiplicative decomposition of the deformation gradient into elastic and inelastic, several finite deformation SMA constitutive models are proposed. A model which utilizes interesting properties of the logarithmic strain is also introduced. A part of this monograph is devoted to numerical implementation of the proposed constitutive models. Several SMA-based applications, i.e., an SMA spring, a Nitinol stent and a smart micro-gripper are simulated.
