Hardcover. Etat : Very Good. Etat de la jaquette : Very Good. Jacket and illustrations by the author (illustrateur). First Thus. 'Songs of Innocence and of Experience' is a collection of illustrated poems. They appeared in two phases, a few first copies were printed and illuminated by Blake himself in 1789, five years later, he bound these poems with a set of new poems in a volume titled 'Songs of Innocence and of Experience Shewing the Two Contrary States of the Human Soul'. This is a new popular facsimile edition, inspired by the William Blake Trust, published in 1967. Some edge wear and slight chipping to top and bottom of largely brick red jacket and spine, corners rubbed and slightly bruised, spine slightly browned, some slight overall time staining, not price clipped (84s), small previous owner's bookplate to bottom ffep, internally clean tight and square, overall a vg+ copy for its age, unpaginated. Romantic poet and artist William Blake (1757-1827), juxtaposes the innocent world of childhood with the corrupt and repressed one of adults. Many of the poems are in pairs enabling the reader to see the same situation first from the perspective of innocence and then from that of experience. With colour facsimile plates of Blake's original illustrations. Quite a scarce book.

First few (text) leaves foxed as usual, color plates in perfect condition. § Limited to 51 copies, this is copy #14 colored by Samuel Hurd from the original in the British Museum. This facsimile was executed over a period of 8 1/2 years using the same methods by which Blake printed the original. The British Museum copy differs substantially from all other copies especially in the coloring; thus comparison of this example with the Trianon Press facsimile gives quite an insight into Blake's changing sentiments towards this his most famous work. Plate 42, The Tyger, is a good example of how differently he treated one of his best known images over a period of time. Bentley, Blake Books, 178.

xxi, [iii], 74 pp. 1 vols. 8vo. First letterpress edition, issue without "The Little Vagabond". xxi, [iii], 74 pp. 1 vols. 8vo. The first letterpress edition of Blake's Songs of Innocence and Experience, preceded only by the small number of copies of the illuminated first edition engraved and colored by Blake. With a laudatory Preface by the Swedenborgian James John Garth Wilkinson (1812-99), who edited and arranged the present volume for publication. Wilkinson worked from Charles Augustus Tulk's copy of the illuminated first edition (c.1795-1807); Tulk had previously lent his copy to Coleridge. The work appears in two issues, with or without a poem entitled "The Little Vagabound", at page 71, which was supposedly canceled by the editor out of prudishness. No priority has been established Both issues appear with about equal frequency, which is to say, not often. Keynes 135; Bentley & Nurmi 161B; Bentley, Blake Books, 171 Full green morocco gilt. Fine copy. Circular gilt vellum label of William Twopeny First letterpress edition, issue without "The Little Vagabond".
