Medico e astrologo, Gruenpeck fu al servizio di Carlo III e poi segretario dell'imperatore del Sacro Romano Impero Massimiliano I. Egli nelle sue visioni profetiche, sempre pronto a sottolineare la condizione del popolo più povero e influenzabile, contrappone passato e presente, Sacro e profano, amplificando l'effetto del cambio tra la notte e il giorno come elemento di paragone fondamentale per i mutamenti del carattere e dell'umore.
