(Hardcover, 1987). 1987 1st edition. 8vo (157 x 241mm). Pp206. B/w photographs, illustrations, foreword by Phil Drabble. Green cloth, spine titled in gilt. Scratches to boards, slight browning and use. Good copy, lacks dust-wrapper. Author's inscription on title page, to Stephen and Janice Walker (involved in the book's production). A collection of John Moore's writing on country sports selected from his 40 books and his weekly articles in the Birmingham Mail. Compiled by his sister Daphne Moore with an introduction by Phil Drabble. "Some of Moore's finest writing encompassed angling, shooting, hunting and horses; his sister, Daphne Moore, has drawn together this collection of his writing on country sports. Although Moore regarded these sports as an integral part of an Englishman's love of the countryside he was also deeply interested in conservation long before it became fashionable and this is apparent in his writing. Daphne Moore introduces the anthology with a memoir of her brother and her notes bring special insights into his development as a writer. Writing in The Times when John Moore died in 1967, Sir Compton Mackenzie compared him with Gilbert White, Jefferies and Cobbett for like them he could capture in his writing the smell of river, field, hedgerow and copse. Sport and the English Countryside will be enjoyed by all those who share his passionate belief in the need to maintain the traditions of rural England in the modern world." .
