Première édition, rare sur le marché, de ce "projet de paix perpétuelle avec autrui". "Quoi que l'ouvrage ait paru en 1675 [après sa retraite de la vie diplomatique], il semble que c'est en 1657 que Courtin en a conçu le projet. Il est entré à ce moment en contact avec des "fâcheux", dont il a dû souffrir le comportement pénible, les calomnies et les injures. Il aura à ce propos ce qu'on pourrait appeler une crise d'honneur, réagira aux calomnies et cherchera sincèrement une attitude de conciliation qui permette d'arrêter les méfaits des importuns, sorte de projet de paix perpétuelle avec autrui. C'est lui qui est en cause, c'est son honneur qui est en jeu. Un complot fomenté par ses ennemis Silhon et le comte Tott afin de le perdre dans l'esprit et la faveur du cardinal Mazarin. Courtin se voit alors dans l'obligation de se défendre. Son christianisme le pousserait certes à pardonner les injures, mais la nécessité politique le contraint à divulguer le complot. Nous voyons dès lors se dessiner la dialectique du pardon et de la justice qui sera développée dans le Point d'honneur." (Kamal Farid, Antoine de Courtin (1622-1685), Etude critique, 1969). Après avoir tracé un modèle de l'honnête homme dans son Nouveau traité de la civilité qui se pratique en France (1671), Courtin entreprend ici de consacrer une étude spéciale aux questions d'honneur qui tiennent une place considérable dans la société de son temps. Il essaie de distinguer le vrai et le faux honneur, de concilier les prescriptions de l'honneur et celles de la charité, et condamne absolument le duel comme un "attentat contre la majesté du souverain", une défiance en sa justice, indigne de l'honnête homme et du chrétien.
