Illustrations by Masakazu Kuwata (illustrateur). First Edition. First translated and illustrated edition of the 1682 transgressive Japanese classic; the tale of a hedonistic daijin (man of wealth) who bring us through his amorous coming of age to its maturation. Controversial for not shying away from homosexuality and other taboos of the times, this beautiful edition brought Ihara's classic work of the Genkoru period "pleasure dirstricts" for modern appreciation, and it has stayed more or less in print and circulation since. Very Good (+), some toning to edges, silver foil to stamped lettering shows some cracking, tight binding, light soiling, else clean. Good jacket, showing 5.00 publisher price but clipped to bottom front flap, major sunning to spine and top of jacket, moderate chipping especially near perimeters of spine. Hardcover octavo, purple cloth decoratively blindstamped to top board with silver stamped lettering to spine, 233 pp.
