Description du livre : London: John Murray, 1880, 1880. Octavo. Original green cloth, spine lettered in gilt and with gilt decorative border at ends, covers blindstamped, brown coated endpapers. With the publisher's 32-page catalogue, dated May 1878, to the rear. Bookseller's ticket to rear pastedown. Slight rubbing to extremities, tiny nick to head of front joint, small glue residue to front free endpaper; an excellent, largely unopened, copy. With 196 woodcuts in the text. First edition, first issue, with 32 pp. inserted adverts dated May 1878 and with two lines of errata at the foot of page x. "The first edition was published on November 6, 1880, and it is recorded that 1,500 copies were sold at Murray's autumn sale" (Freeman). The collaborative authorship proclaimed on the title page reflects Darwin's concern to introduce his children into the world of science. Francis Darwin had trained as a doctor but turned from medicine to botany, initially working as secretary and assistant to his father. In 1876 he had been for some months at the University of Würzburg, learning laboratory methods from Julius Sachs. "The book was an extension of Charles Darwin's work on climbing plants and it showed that the same mechanisms can be observed in plants in general. By extending the idea of irregular circumnutation the Darwins analysed the growth movement of plants in response to factors of the environment such as light, gravity, and wounds. In addition, they demonstrated that the mechanism of curvature in both roots and shoots was the result of differential growth rates. They could also confirm that the effect of the stimuli on the growth movement was indirect and that light and gravity act on some substance in the tip of the root and the shoot, which is transmitted to other parts of the plant. Francis Darwin later refined some of the experimental techniques and modified their theoretical conclusions" (ODNB). This copy with the compliments slip of bibliophile Arnold Muirhead (1900–1988) laid-in. Freeman 1325. N° de réf. du libraire 120403

Description du livre : John Murray, London, 1880. First edition of Darwin's examination of the mechanisms of motion in flowering plants, a follow-up to his work on climbing plants ? based on experiments conducted with the assistance of his son Francis Darwin, and mentioning natural selection as a possible explanation for plants' ability to bend towards or away from environmental stimuli (pp. 569/70). The volume is illustrated with => numerous in-text engravings of circumnutation patterns, plant structures, diurnal and nocturnal leaf positions, tropisms, etc. This is the first issue of the first edition, with two lines of errata on p. x and publisher's advertisements at the back dated 1878. 8vo (19.5 cm, 7.65"). x, 592, 32 (adv.) pp.; illus. NSTC 0174363. Publisher's textured green cloth, covers framed in blind, spine with gilt-stamped title; faint discoloration to outer edge of front cover and lower outer corner of back cover, tiny spots of insect damage near joints (one carrying through about 60 pp., not touching text). Hinges (inside) tender, as is often seen with this book, with pastedowns and free endpapers showing evidence of past dampness in lower portions, not affecting interior; two leaves with corners lost away from text. Title-page with early inked ownership inscription in upper portion, first text page (only) with pencilled marks of emphasis; pages clean. British bookseller's invoice from 1983 laid in. A pleasing copy. N° de réf. du libraire 30671

Description du livre : John Murray, London, 1880. Decorative Cloth. État : Fine. First Edition. 8vo: x,592,32(publisher's catalog, dated January, 1882)pp, with 196 text woodcuts. Original publisher's standard green pebbled cloth, covers paneled in blind, spine lettered and decorated in gilt, brown end papers. According to Freeman, the inserted catalog may be variously dated, beginning with January 1879. A superior copy, extremely well preserved, binding tight and square, text virtually pristine. Freeman 1326. Second Thousand (with two lines of errata at foot of page x corrected). According to Freeman, this title sold fewer copies than any other of Darwin's books, and consequently was not reprinted in England after the year of his death until modern facsimiles appeared of the first thousand, in 1966, and the second, in 1969. It was mainly a book for specialists, an extension of Darwin's work on climbing plants to demonstrate that the same mechanisms elaborated in the earlier book hold true for flowering plants generally. N. B. With few exceptions (always identified), we only stock books in exceptional condition, carefully preserved in archival, removable polypropylene sleeves. All orders are packaged with care and posted promptly. Satisfaction guaranteed. N° de réf. du libraire BB1505

Description du livre : John Murray, London, England, 1880. Half-Leather. État : Fine. 1st Edition. DESCRIPTION: 8vo, 592 pp, 196 text woodcuts. Assisted by Francis Darwin. adverts (32pp, dated May 1878). BLACK AND WHITE ILLUSTRATIONS. Images and contents below. Freeman ref: F1325 Recently rebound in quarter green Morocco with calf labels hand-lettered in 24ct gold (the titling has been kept the same as on the original cloth spines: "The Movements of Plants"). Binding tight. Fresh green endpapers. No previous names. Generally very clean- a very good, tight copy. This title is, without doubt, the hardest of Darwin's scientific works to obtain in a Murray imprint. Only about 3000 were issued in the entire 19th Century and none were printed at all in the UK in the 20th Century, by any publisher, until facsimiles appeared in the 1960s. "This was an extension of the work on climbing plants to show that the same mechanisms hold good for flowering plants in general. It was another specialist book and seems to have sold fewer copies than any other, and was not reprinted in England after the year of Darwin's death until modern facsimilies appeared of the first thousand in 1966 and the second in 1969. "The first edition was published on November 6, 1880, and it is recorded that 1,500 copies were sold at Murray's autumn sale. It was in a standard binding and cost 15s. There are thirty-two pages of inserted advertisements dated May 1878; to have them more than two years earlier than the date of the book is unusual, but this is normal and they are present in Darwin's own copy, at Cambridge. In this issue there are two lines of errata on page x which are corrected in the second thousand of the same year. In this second thousand, the advertisements may be the same as those in the first, but are more often dated November 1880. In the third thousand of 1882, the last Murray printing, the preface is slightly altered. In all three, the spine title differs from the form on the title page, reading 'The movements of plants'.". Description du livre : D. Appleton & Co., New York, 1881. FIRST AMERICAN EDITION, ONLY ISSUE. With 196 wood-engraved figures in the text, and 10 pages publisher's advertisements. Original publisher's red cloth with flower-pattern endpapers. First American edition, sole issue, published soon after the first edition of 6 November 1880. This was an extension of Darwin's work on climbing plants, and according to Freeman, it sold fewer copies than his other books. Darwin's investigation on the "sleep of plants" was of major significance. He found that plants need sufficient light during the day, and that darkness and radiation made them fold up.
