Livre
Hardcover. Etat : Good. "Thomas Hardy, Novelist or Poet?" by A. Edward Newton (1864 - 1940), was privately published in a limited print run of 950 copies. It contains facsimiles of original letters by Hardy that were held in the "Oak Knoll" Library. This is the 1929 First Edition, printed by Edward Stern & Company in Philadelphia, PA. The book is graced with a frontispiece that is a monochrome reproduction after the original portrait painting of Hardy by Augustus John. ******************************************** A. Edward Newton, world famous bibliophile, and author of "The Amenities of Book Collecting" and other well-received books on book collecting, wrote a brief note at the front of this book : "The entire edition, less a few copies reserved by the author for presentation purposes, is for sale, and the resulting profit will be forwarded to the Committee in England having charge of the erection of a suitable monument to Thomas Hardy, either on Egdon Heath or elsewhere. Announcement will be made by Messrs. Harper and Brothers of the amount subscribed as a result of this effort." That was in 1929. Hardy died in 1928. Egdon Heath was a fictionalized area, considered to be somewhat east of Dorchester. In Dorchester there is a handsome statue of Hardy. Whether this is the monument intended by the efforts of this book, I do not know. ****************************************** This copy has a most amazing bookplate on the front paste-down, of which the person or persons behind it remain unknown. The initials "SRL and DBL" are written in ink on the first preliminary blank page after the front end-papers. I do not know if these initials are connected with the bookplate or not. I've included an enlarged view of the plate. This copy lacks the original slip-case and glassine wrapper with which the book was originally issued. It has a few condition issues on its exterior. Please read our full condition report, given below. ****************************************** TITLE : Thomas Hardy, Novelist or Poet ? / AUTHOR : A Edward Newton (1864 - 1940) / Thomas Hardy (Facsimile Letters) / FRONTISPIECE : Augustus John / IMPRINT : Privately Published / PLACE : "Oak Knoll" - Berwyn P.O., Pennsylvania / DATE : 1929 / EDITION : First Edition, Limited to a print run of 950 copies / PRINTER : Edward Stern & Co. Howard; [42] pages [The facsimile pages are not paginated, however, there is an error in the full printed pagination, in which page numbers were omitted]; 7 1/2" x 10 1/2"; quarter-bound, with dark blue cloth-covered spine , and grayish-blue, paper-covered boards; paper title labels on spine and front board; grayish-blue end-papers. Sans slip-case and glassine wrapper. 8 blank preliminary pages; 8 blank subsequent pages at the end of the book. ***************************************** CONDITION NEAR VERY GOOD This is a previously owned book that remains clean and serviceable, with the following particulars noted :: EXTERIOR : Compression and some fraying to spine extremities; paper title labels display silverfish nibbling (see picture); spine cloth board-extensions display a few small spots and some mild weathering; front board has two smallish water stains, one each at the top and bottom edges; front board displays abrasion (or scratches) along the fore-edge, and, to a lesser degree, a few further inward under the label; rear board displays similar scratches; board corner tips are slightly bumped, with attendant small splitting of surface paper; text-block edges are darkened, else clear; else exterior is clean. / BINDING : Solid - Book opens easily.
