[vi]+350pp, engraved devices on tp & after the last page of text, headpieces, old worm holes in the bottom margin throughout which very occasionally reach the printed text but with the meaning clear, hinges cracked, and spine ends rubbed. ESTCT 85806. A collected edition of three works attacking what Edmund Gibson [ 1669 - 1748 ] Bishop of London, saw as a rise in 'Profaneness and Impiety' in the people of London. Gibson believed this was caused by an increase in books which attacked Christianity, so his answer was to write three letters to the people of London, containing 'Rules and Cautions' designed to strengthen the faith of 'sincere and unprejudic'd Christians' and to preserve them 'from these dangerous Infections'. Individually they were published in large amounts ( a total of 74000 copies of the first 3 were printed ) but this collected edition had a print run of just 3000 copies. 300 grams.

Seven works in one volume, 8vo. Upper wrapper of Blacow's Defence bound in, "The Queen that Jack Found" with 13 woodcuts - 12 by George Cruikshank - and bound without the advertisements, Osmer's Dissertation lacking one leaf (pp 43/4). Some light foxing and soiling, old manuscript contents list to front blank, marbled endpapers, sides and edges, bookplates to paste down and fly leaf. 19th century half calf, slightly worn, rebacked with a black label reading "Pamphlets". A varied collection of 18th and 19th century works, including several very rare items. Scholefield's sermon followed the riots and destruction of the Dissenters' chapels in Birmingham. The Abstract and Appendix to the Sacred Tragedy are removed from a larger work. Rev. Richard Blacow was convicted of libel, having referred to Queen Caroline in a sermon as "the Goddess of Lust", and she is also the subject of the lively poem "The Queen That Jack Found", which contains caricatures of the royal couple and other public figures. Freer's paper on syphilis was his only published work. Only two copies (Oxford and Cambridge) located of Blacow's Defence, and one (Edinburgh) of the play "The Operatives". Osmer's "Dissertation on Horses" is a very scarce work in any edition with only three copies appearing at auction in the last 30 years. Cohn 679.

First edition of all three volumes, with the third volume being a reissue of the original edition of 1701. A remarkable achievement, both by poet and by engraver. Four volumes, 12mo, pp. [iv], iv, [viii], 272; [x], 276; [x], 264; [x], 264; each volume with an engraved frontispiece (repeated n vol I); uniformly bound in early 19th century calf, spines gilt, black morocco labels (rubbed, spines dull, rather worn with at least one hinge breaking). Third edition of vols I-III, first edition of vol IV. One of the best early 18th-century collections of songs, a great many of them from contemporary plays and operas; most are on amorous themes, and many are ribald. The first two volumes appeared originally in 1724, with the first volume going quickly into a second edition; vol III was printed the following year. The fourth volume differs slightly in that most of the songs are provided with titles; there are no indications of authorship, but among the poems at the beginning are lyrics by James Thomson, Henry Baker, Matthew Pilkington, John Gay, and Lewis Theobald, along with a song from Handel's Acis and Galatea. Each volume has the same engraved frontispiece; in vol I there is also a leaf of explanation, in the form of a poem called 'The Reformation of Parnassus'. The first volume also includes a four-page essay by Ambrose Philips called 'A Criticism on Song-Writing'; this was not included in the first edition. Because of the serial manner of publication, many of the locations in the ESTC are for odd volumes: for some reason, vol IV is particularly uncommon. Case notes the presence of J. Walthoe catalogues at the end of Vols. III-IV, but none is present here. With the book labels of the literary antiquary Joseph Haslewood (1769-1833) in vols I-III; later 19th-century bookplates of John Matthews of New York. Case 331 (1)(c), (2)(c), (3)(c), and (4)(a).

John Temple (1600 - 1677) was born in Ireland.and educated at Trinity College, Dublin and spent some time travelling abroad.[1] On his return he entered the personal service of Charles I and was knighted. Temple returned to Ireland and on 31 January 1640 succeeded Sir Christopher Wandesford as Master of the Rolls in Ireland and was admitted to the Privy Council of Ireland. When the Irish Rebellion of 1641 broke out in October he served the government in provisioning the city. On 23 July 1642 he was elected Member of the Irish House of Commons for Meath, being described as of Ballycrath, County Carlow. He tended to support the Parliamentary side and in August 1643 he was suspended from his office by the Lords Justices, Sir John Borlase and Sir Henry Tichborne, acting on instructions from King Charles. He was imprisoned in Dublin Castle with Sir William Parsons, Sir Adam Loftus, and Sir Robert Meredyth. The main charge against him was of writing in May and June two scandalous letters against the King, which suggested the King had favoured the rebels.[ After a year's imprisonment he was exchanged, and in 1645 was chosen MP for Chichester in the Long Parliament of the English House of Commons in compensation for the harsh treatment he had undergone. He received special thanks for the services he had rendered to the English interest in Ireland at the beginning of the rebellion" (ODNB) In 1646 Temple published his Irish Rebellion; Or an history of the beginning and first progresse of the generall rebellion raised within the kingdom of Ireland upon the . 23 Oct. 1641. Together with the barbarous cruelties and bloody massacres which ensued thereupon, which created an immediate and great sensation. Its statements were received with unquestioning confidence, as the work of a professed eye-witness who could speak with authority, and did much to inflame popular indignation in Britain against the Irish." ".The Temple.is probably the printed book that has had the greatest impact on Irish History. Although the events of the rising of 1641 were black enough in reality it was Temple's gross exaggeration of them, especially in regard to the massacres of protestants by the native Catholic Irish, that was taken thenceforth as a true historical record by Irish Protestants. This book, frequently reprinted, determined both the mythology and martyrology of succeeding generations of Irish Protestants who, drawing on the book, perceived of themselves as locked in a struggle between good and evil with a foe that was barbaric and cruel, that could never be trusted, and that must be driven either off or down if their Protestant community was to survive. That view that Temple created was dominant in the governing class in Ireland for centuries, and it still lives on in the north of Ireland today Subsequently, the truth of many of its statements have been questioned and it became viewed as a partisan pamphlet rather than an historical treatise. Temple's Irish Rebellion was often praised by authors hostile to Roman Catholicism, including John Milton and Voltaire. The Irish were so incensed against the book that one of the first resolutions of the Patriot Parliament of 1689 was to order it to be burnt by the common hangman. (Dictionary of Irish Biography) In the author's preface, Sir John Temple briliantly expounds: ".Most men are great lovers of themselves and such constant admirers of their own actions, as they think they do well to be angry at any thing that shall (though never so truly) be reported to their disadvantage. They consider not their own natural imbecillilties, their passions, distempers, or ill affactions which lead them on to advise or act things of an ill fame; but are ready to fly in the faces of those who shall even in the fairest characters represent or leave any impressions of them. Hence it is that the truth of things comes quite to be overshadowed with false colours, and so to remain as it were buried alive, or otherwise to appear extreamly disfugured through gross errors, base flattery, or willful mistakes. For most men that are present adventurers in this kind, are wise enough to apprehend their own danger; and thereupon departing fromt he common interest that every other man hath in their story, reflect only upon their own particular, and suffer themselves to be overawed with the humour of the present times; or so far transported, either with the benefits or private injuuries received from particular persons, as they transmit very imperfect and weaker relations, or otherwise fill them up with such counterfeit stuff, as posterity will owe little to their information.".
