Contemporary full leather; slender splitting along front and rear joints causing some slight pliability to front and rear boards (text block itself is still firm); spine head worn even with text block's top edge; spine leather a bit faded with some surface furrows; spine decorated with gilt tooling and maroon title label; surface chips near spine heel along with remnant of past owner's personal age-toned library paper label; slender wear at board edges. Slender patch of shallow nicking at lower fore-edge of some early leaves. Front free endpaper strongly creased; old ink stamp "S.B. Mathews" on front pastedown with his name in pencil on rear pastedown; antiquarian ink signature "Jas[?] H. Watkins" at top of ffep recto along with bookseller's pencil notation; toning and foxing throughout with some tidelines to early and late leaves; a few creased page corners. Four b/w plates on opposing versos and rectos with two interlaying tissue guard sheets in initial unpaged (four leaf) section. Biographical essay "The Life of Dr. Wm. Robertson" on pages i-xxxii. William Robertson's classic account of the discovery of the American continent was first published in London in 1777 with the earliest American editions being issued in New York in 1798 and Philadelphia in 1812.
