First British edition of Leeâ s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel. Octavo, original cloth. Signed by both Harper Lee and Truman Capote on the front free endpaper. Truman Capoteâ s friendship with Harper Lee began in the summer of 1929 when the two became next door neighbors in Monroeville, Alabama; both were the age of five. They shared a love of reading and began collaborating when Lee was gifted a typewriter by her father as a child. Lee drew on their friendship as inspiration for the characters Lee and Scout in her masterpiece To Kill A Mockingbird; Capote based his tomboy character Idabel Thompkins in his first novel Other Voices, Other Rooms on Lee. They worked together on Capoteâ s true crime novel, In Cold Blood; Lee acted as his â assistant researchistâ and edited the final draft of the book. Upon its publication in 1965, Capote failed to acknowledge Leeâ s contributions to the book, after which their relationship was never the same. Near fine in a near fine dust jacket with light rubbing and wear to the extremities. Jacket design by Fratini. Exceptionally rare and desirable signed by both Lee and Capote. To Kill a Mockingbird became an immediate bestseller and won the 1961 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction. The New Yorker declared it "skilled, unpretentious, and totally ingenious". It has gone on to become of the best-loved classics of all time and has been translated into more than forty languages selling more than forty million copies worldwide. Made into the Academy Award-winning film, directed by Robert Mulligan, starring Gregory Peck. It went on to win three Oscars: Best Actor for Gregory Peck, Best Art Direction-Set Decoration, Black-and-White, and Best Screenplay for Horton Foote. It was nominated for five more Oscars including Best Actress in a Supporting Role for Mary Badham, the actress who played Scout. In 1995, the film was listed in the National Film Registry. In 2003, the American Film Institute named Atticus Finch the greatest movie hero of the 20th century. In 2007 the film ranked twenty-fifth on the AFI's 10th anniversary list of the greatest American movies of all time. It was named the best novel of the twentieth century by librarians across the country (Library Journal).

Hardcover. Etat : Near Fine. Etat de la jaquette : Near Fine. First edition. Top corners a little bumped and faint offsetting on the front fly, a square, very near fine copy in a lovely very near fine dust jacket with a little rubbing corresponding with the bumped corners, and a couple of other tiny rubbed spots, but fresh and unlike most copies encountered, completely untouched by restorers. A classic novel about adolescence and the battle against injustice, basis for the equally classic film with Gregory Peck and, in his pivotal film debut, Robert Duvall as Boo Radley. The author's first novel, winner of the 1961 Pulitzer Prize for fiction. Exceptionally scarce in this condition; this is one of the nicest copies we've seen.

Rare advance reading copy of the first edition of Harper Lee's classic Pulitzer Prize-winning novel signed by three actors from the 1962 film and with a two page autograph letter signed and entirely in the hand of Harper Lee declining the invitation to participate in a documentary film about her novel. Octavo, original wrappers. Presentation copy, inscribed by three actors from the film on the pastedown and front free endpaper, "Bonnie Great Weekend My Best Wishes Phillip Alford 'Jem'", "To Bonnie Sincere regards Brock Peters 'Tom Robinson'", and "Bonnie, Thank you so much for all your help this week. Please stay in touch. You are now a member of our family. Sincerely Mary Badham 'Scout.'" With an autograph letter signed and entirely in the hand of Harper Lee which reads in full, "3 September '97 NYC but on the way South! Dear Ms. Lafave: I am sorry to be so long in writing you, but Claudia Johnson sent your letter to my NY address where I signed for it on my way out of town. I'm back here now, but only until Saturday, when I return to Monroeville for the winter. I must say no to your kind request. I simply do not grant interviews, & loathe talking about myself, and the prospect of participating in a documentary film fills me with dread. You may not realize it, but in the five years since you visited there, Monroeville has developed a new industry - tourism, with Harper Lee the main attraction. They've even produced a map, showing where the houses of my neighborhood used to be! I cannot tell you of the cynicism of the whole operation and the embarrassment it causes me. Monroeville is now a perfect example of Faulknerian prophecy: in the South, the Snopeses shall prevail, Faulkner was breathtaking in the accuracy of his observations. (That might be worth looking into for a film, although it requires a re-reading of the Snopes trilogy!) Why even return, you may well ask. Because of family, that is the one and only reason. I did so love the Eudora Welty film. She, of course, is my favorite American writer and the film itself seemed perfect of its kind. Thank you for it, and for thinking of me in similar terms! Sincerely, Harper Lee." With the original transmittal envelope addressed in Harper Lee's hand and postmarked September 4, 1997. The recipient, Bonnie Lafave is an American documentary filmmaker and producer. In the early 1990s Lefave reached out to Alice Lee to see if she could assist her in arranging a meeting with Harper Lee to discuss the production of a documentary film about the place of To Kill a Mockingbird in American culture. She met with Alice at her law office in Monroeville and was told that Nelle "preferred a quiet life" and would not want to participate, however, she was welcome to send her a letter. Some time later, Lefave began to correspond with writer and scholar, Claudia Durst Johnson, who had a warm relationship with Ms. Lee. In 1997, Claudia was attending a conference about To Kill a Mockingbird in Virginia and suggested that Lefave attend also. She brought with her her advance reading copy of To Kill a Mockingbird to share with Claudia which she impulsively asked three members of the cast of the 1962 film adaptation who were also in attendance, including Mary Badham who played Scout. After the conference, Lefave wrote a careful letter to Ms. Lee which Claudia forwarded to her for her consideration. Lee kindly responded with her own letter, and not surprisingly, declined to participate in the documentary. In near fine condition. An exceptional example of this rarity, printed before the first trade edition appeared and was swiftly acknowledged as one of the greatest American novels of the twentieth century, with fine provenance, and offering remarkable insight into Lee's deep personal thoughts regarding the reception of her great work. First edition, first printing, in the first issue jacket. Lee's debut novel became an immediate best-seller and won the 1961 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction. It is "an authentic and nostalgic story which in rare fashion at once puts together the tenderness and the tragedy of the South. They are the inseparable ingredients of a region much reported but seldom so well understood" (jacket). The first issue jackets have, as here, the Truman Capote blurb printed in green on the front flap and the Jonathan Daniels blurb on the rear flap, and do not have any mention of a second or later printing at the bottom of the front flap. Octavo. Original green cloth-backed brown boards, spine lettered in brown. With dust jacket. Housed in a burgundy quarter morocco solander box by the Chelsea Bindery. Spine cocked, ends faintly sunned and rubbed; a near-fine copy in very good jacket indeed, price-clipped, extremities lightly creased, edges a little nicked with a few short closed tears to head, rear panel lightly marked with small abrasion to foot, a very bright and pleasing example.

Etat : Near Fine. Etat de la jaquette : Very Good +. First edition. A Near Fine copy of the book in a Very Good+ dust jacket. Spine a trifle cocked and a previous owner's name on the front paste-down. Dust jacket with the edge of the flaps skinned (after jacket protector removal), some minor creases to the jacket panels, but generally a fresh example of the jacket. Housed in a quarter-leather green slipcase with chemise. Harper Lee's Pulitzer Prize winning coming of age novel, set in Maycomb, Alabama. An American classic, the novel took over two years for Lee to write- it was inspired by her own upbringing. (In fact, Lee's father was a lawyer who had defended black clients at the cost of his practice). Its production was not without difficulty and Lee once became so angry over the course of writing the novel that she tossed the manuscript out a window. The book has never been out of print, sold tens of millions of copies, and is required reading for the American adolescent. To Kill a Mockingbird was also adapted by Horton Foote into a 1963 film, directed by Robert Mulligan and starring Gregory Peck. The film would win three Oscars. ".skilled, unpretentious, and totally ingenious." (Contemporary New Yorker review). Near Fine in Very Good + dust jacket.

Hardcover. Etat : Near Fine. Etat de la jaquette : Fine. 1st Edition. This is a gorgeous unread signed copy of the first book club edition, first issue of this 1960 Pulitzer Prize winner for fiction. It s quite rare in this condition. The book is inscribed on the front free endpaper by Harper Lee to book collector Dan Pope who said that "back in the early 1980s I mailed four books to her home in Monroeville, AL and she kindly signed them for me." The dust jacket is fine with rich and bright colors, no tears, folds, or fading. Just like the trade edition, there is the photograph on the back of Ms. Lee taken by Truman Capote and a review on the inside flaps by Jonathan Daniels. The boards are fresh, tight and square. The inscription on the reads: To Dan Pope, with my best wishes, Harper Lee". A fantastic copy of this important book. Signed by Author(s).

First British Edition. Signed by Mary Badham, the actress who played Scout Finch in the classic motion picture adaptation, with a quotation handwritten by Ms. Badham of her dialogue from the film: ÒWell, it would be like shooting a mockingbird wouldnÕt it?Ó Scout Finch - Mary Badham.Ó The line is spoken by Scout towards the end of the film when Sheriff Tate and Atticus (Gregory Peck) agree that Boo Radley should not be brought forth for killing Bob Ewell while Radley was defending Scout and her brother, as Ewell had been attacking the children. Atticus asks her if she understands why they are doing this, and with her growing awareness and maturity she replies with the above line. Mary Badham gave one of the finest performances by a child in motion picture history and she was nominated for an Academy Award. Both the novel and the film are told through the eyes of Scout making this book a very charming piece with the signed quotation. About fine copy with the barest hint of edge wear in a near fine bright dust jacket with some very minor fading at the spine. Laid in is a color photograph of Ms. Badham holding a copy of the Fortieth Anniversary Edition of To Kill a Mockingbird which was released in 1999 taken at the time this copy was signed by Badham.

Boards. Etat : Very Good +. Etat de la jaquette : Very Good. The elusive 1960 stated 2nd printing, published in the same year as the July 1960 1st printing. Clean and VG+ in its duotone boards, with a tight binding and very solid hinges. And in a bright, price-clipped, VG example of the stated 2nd printing dustjacket, with its iconic design by Shirley Smith. Light wear along the edges, light creasing at the spine ends. A touch of mild soiling and rubbing to the panels but the Truman Capote photo of his friend Harper Lee that graces the back cover remains bright and clean. Overall, a presentable, very solid copy.

Hardcover. Etat : Very Good. Etat de la jaquette : Very Good. 1st Edition. Third Impression; A Very Good plus book in a Very Good early issue dust jacket (with Harper Lee photo to the back panel and Capote blurb to the front flap). SIGNED by the author to a laid in bookplate. An outstanding copy of this title, an absolute classic of American Literature, scarce with Ms. Lee's signature; now housed in a custom clamshell box. This copy is in very good or better condition with clean green and brown boards, sharp brown lettering over a tight spine, and clean white pages throughout; the book does show some light rubbing and sunning to the board edges, a faint vertical crease down the back board, and a few tiny age spots to the exterior text block, else near fine or better. Housed in a crisp and clean original price clipped dust jacket that shows moderate rubbing and creasing to the panel edges, corners, and flap folds, an inconspicuous crease to the back panel (corresponds to the crease to the back board), a couple of short closed tears to the spine foot, and a faint damp stain to the bottom panel edge along the spine foot. Overall, a highly presentable and collectible copy, greatly enhanced by the laid in signature. Not remaindered, not ex-library; in a protective Mylar sleeve and will ship carefully wrapped in a sturdy box. Signed by Author(s).
