The book and its contents are in generally clean condition. The orange covers have several spots of ground-in dirt. There are three small rings of white discoloration to the front cover. There is fading to the spine and spots of rubbing and light fraying to the spine ends. The text pages are generally clean and bright.

This is the last Tom Swift novel by the original author, who wrote the first 35 novels in the series. The remaining 5 books in the series were written by others. Tom invents a giant electromagnet to help process scrap iron, but it comes in handy when the Navy loses an experimental submarine.

Same previous owner blacked out writing on ffep; marker has bled through onto back of frontispiece. Frontispiece by Nat Falk; decorative end pages show many of Tom Swift's inventive ideas. Orange boards vivid and in good condition; corners and spine ends bumped. Back board slightly soiled, and front board has a couple of smudges. When a scrap yard owner wants a larger, more powerful magnet to help make his business more efficient, Tom is up to the task. One of Tom's rivals sees an opportunity, and a competition ensues. Assumed first edition as this is the last title on the series list on backside of title page and at end of book. 216pp., followed by lists of other similar series from the publisher.

Book is "very good" in original tan "quad" (not orange) boards. Glossy B&W frontispiece is firmly in place. Jacket is "good-minus" -- showing some moderate staining to rear panel and a small hole near bottom of said rear panel, and with type considerably faded to brown to jacket spine (though Tom Swift portrait there, in blue ink, remains strong.) In fact, it appears spine of this jacket was once damp, though this can only be easily discerned to verso. NON-authorial Christmas 1932 gift inscription to a "Page Cashin" (possibly of Minnesota) to otherwise blank FFE. The name "Page Cashin" has also been rubber-stamped to tops of both pastedowns. This title shows up last to both jacket and copyright page, of course. Multiple listings of the Don Sturdy series all end with "On the Ocean Bottom" (1932), while jacket rear flap lists Ted Scott Flying Stories through "Following the Sun Shadow" (1932), only. Probably the last Swiftie authored by Howard Garis of "Uncle Wiggily" fame before he parted company over a salary dispute and Stratemeyer daughter Harriet Stratemeyer Adams -- instead of merely providing an outline -- reportedly wrote the final three original Tom Swifts, starting with "Television Detector" (1933.) 216 pp. Reduced from $375.

Jacket has numerous chips and closed tears, including missing the top .25 inch at the top of the spine panel and the bottom 1 inch of the spine panel; now in new removable protective cover. The white on the spine and rear panel has darkened with age; and a prior owner has made pencil ticks on some of the titles on the Tom Swift list on the front flap. Light brown cloth covered boards, with black print on spine and front, and red and black Tom Swift "quad" type illustration, with Tom in four modes of transportation (airplane, motor car, motor cycle, and motor boat) at the four corners of the front and the title in large oval in the center of the front. Plain end papers, with gift inscription dated Christmas 1934. Frontispiece on glossy paper, tipped-in. Pages are clean and unmarked, on good quality paper.
