Edité par Southern Pacific Line, 1943

Livre
Soft cover. Etat : Very Good. "Scenic Grandeur of the West" is a portfolio of sixteen individual color tinted photographs of various scenes and man-made structures as seen along the Southern Pacific Railway Line. The pictures which are variously oriented horizontally or vertically, measure approximately 10 inches by 8 inches (or vice-versa, depending on orientation). They were published by Southern Pacific Lines and printed in 1943 by the National Color Press of San Francisco. Aside from the folio's title, publishing information, and a caption for each picture, there is no text. ***************************************** The 16 pictures show the following (in no particular order) : Streamliner City of San Francisco (Railroad Train) Crossing Salt Lake / Daylight Limited (Railroad Train) traveling north along the Pacific Ocean on the San Francisco - Los Angeles Route (other than a wooden fence and some telephone poles, there are no man-made structures in view) / Roosevelt Dam, Arizona / Cypress Point, Monteray / San Joaquin Daylight on Tehachapi Loop, Southern Pacific Line (Showing S.P. Steam Locomotive No. 4449 rounding a hill) / Palm Springs, California (Showing a round swimming pool surrounded by palm trees and a few relaxing people. A man is diving into the pool) / Giant Cactus, Arizona (Lovely desert scene, with no man-made structures in sight - just several large Cacti against a background of blue sky and fluffy white clouds. - this picture has a single creased corner tip) / Yosemite Falls, Yosemite National Park, California / Carlsbad Caverns, New Mexico / Golden Gate Bridge, San Francisco (With two U.S.N. battleships passing by below) / The Wawona "Tunnel Tree", Mariposa Grove, Yosemite National Park / San Francisco - Oakland Bridge - from Yerba Buena Island (light traffic on the bridge - looks like a ferry passing by below) / Union Station, Los Angeles (Lots of old vintage cars parked in front) / Home of Ancient Cliff Dwellers, Arizona) / Half Dome from Glacier Point, Yosemite National Park / Oil Wells on the Beach near Santa Barbara ! (I found this shocking - to be included in a portfolio of Western Grandeur - in my mind, nothing grand about this. notice the discoloration of the water around the wells.) ********************************************* I found it interesting that two different types of locomotive engines are depicted in some of the pictures. Two of them show the beautiful Southern Pacific No. 4449 Steam Locomotive - truly handsome with its lovely red and orange "Daylight" colors, which was why it was nicknamed "The Daylight". It was a true, swoopy Art Deco marvel ! Also shown is the Streamliner "City of San Francisco" locomotive, which was Union Pacific train 101. That handsome train operated from June of 1936 to June of 1972. *************************************** TITLE : Scenic Grandeur of the West / AUTHOR : Unattributed / IMPRINT : Southern Pacific Line (Railroad Company) / PRINTER : National Color Press / PLACE : San Francisco / DATE : 1943 / EDITION : Unstated Printing / STATUS : Out of Print - OP / DETAILS : Stiff paper portfolio folded once vertically, with interior pocket for prints. The front cover of the folder is cut short, with rounded fore-edge corners. On the front, printed in red and yellow against a buff background : a western scene with cowboy on horse, a cactus, and a train emerging from a canyon; a plane flies over all this. On the verso of the front cover are publishing and printing information, stamped in red . The rear cover, which is blank, has a flap which partially covers the prints that are held in the pocket. The pictures are printed on semi-glossy, thin paper. The original envelope which came with the portfolio still accompanies the item, but I have not included it in the evaluation (pricing). ************************************* CONDITION . FOLDER : VERY GOOD PICTURES : VERY GOOD This is a previously owned portfolio which remains clean and attractive, with the following particulars noted :: EXTERIOR -- A touch of creasing along the sine fold; a couple of minute scuffs to the rear exterior - the front displays nicely. Both sides are clean. / INTERIOR -- Clean and unmarked / PICTURES -- One picture (the cacti) has a creased corner; some of the pictures display a small amount of rub about the edges (this has no great effect); the picture of the Roosevelt dam has a small spot in the sky area, which might be in the plate - else all of the pictures display cleanly and brightly. / ENVELOPE -- Not considered as part of the evaluation. It is penciled on with a name (Russell W. Dillenback), and a penned brief description of contents. There is some scattered , dried drops of glue. No address or postal stamp. The envelope seems not to have been posted. Its sole function is to protect the portfolio.
