Antoine Maitre-Jan est considéré comme le fondateur de l'ophtalmologie française. Bien avant Brisseau, dès 1692, il avait montré que la cataracte est bien localisée dans le cristallin. Hard Cover. Etat : Very Good. 1722. The Second Edition, "revised, corrected and augmented" of this landmark work, first published in 1707. Hirschberg, in his History of Ophthalmology, calls this work "the first modern textbook of ophthalmology". Thick 12mo full period calf; spine richly gilt. Light chip to the upper spine tip and light scattered foxing in some of the early leaves, else a very good, clean copy. Quite scarce.

[14]-573-[1] pp. Troyes, Jacques Le Febvre, 1707, in-4, [14]-573-[1] pp, Veau moucheté de l'époque, dos à nerfs orné, Première édition, peu commune, de cet ouvrage qui est l'une des pièces majeures de l'histoire de l'ophtalmologie. Antoine Maître-Jan (1650-1730) divise son ouvrage en deux parties: description de l'oeil puis de ses maladies. L'auteur distingue trois catégories de maladies: les maladies du cristallin connues vulgairement sous le nom de cataractes; maladies du corps vitré, de l'humeur aqueuse, de la rétine, du nerf optique, etc.; maladies situées entre le globe & l'orbite. Tous les exemplaires conservés dans les institutions possèdent (14) ff liminaires. Le feuillet ê4 n'existe apparemment pas; il y a cependant une réclame en bas du feuillet ê3, notée "La", qui ne correspond pas au feuillet qui suit, A1. Ex-libris manuscrit Baillot. Exemplaire en état moyen, avec traces de morsures en marge des premiers feuillets, sans atteinte au texte, et plusieurs surcharges à l'encre sur les gardes et sur le titre. Coiffes et coins usés.
