Very good/ Good+ A grand association copy of the first edition of Leo St. Clare Grondona's briefly significant, if dryly titled, treatise outlining his "system for achieving convertibility of currency based on primary commodities," inscribed to the eminent British monetary economist and LSE's saviour, Alan Day. Born in Melbourne, Leo St. Clare Grondona (1898-1982) worked as a jackaroo and journalist, before moving to London in 1923, where he wrote a weekly 'London Letter' for the Sydney Bulletin. Grondona did not formally trained as an economist (in their History of Australian Economic Thought, Peter Groenewegen and Bruce McFarlane include him in their chapter, 'An Old Tradition: Heretics, cranks and "gifted amateurs,"' referring to him as a "northern developer"), yet his system, developed in the 1940s and first published in its final form in 1958 as Utilizing World Abundance, did have some traction and was debated in British Parliament the same year. It was reissued across subsequent decades (Collins, 1985). Alan Day (1924-2018) was a distinguished academic, policy adviser and public intellectual, who "was appointed Assistant Lecturer [at LSE] in 1949 by Lionel Robbins as part of rebuilding the department after the war, and promoted to Reader in 1956 and to Professor of Economics in 1964, having turned down a chair at Yale." The "prodigious and pragmatic" British monetary economist is also remembered by LSE for his unprecedented two-term tenure as Pro-Director, with the institution "ow[ing] its survival [to him] after the Thatcher government's withdrawal of support for overseas students" (LSE Condolences Blog, 2018).
