Bereits 1974 begann sie mit dem Schreiben. Die Royal Shakespeare Company brachte ihre Romane Wolf Hall und Bring up the Bodies 2013 in Stratford upon Avon auf die Bühne. Eine auf Wolf Hall basierende, gleichnamige Fernsehserie wurde 2015 auf BBC Two ausgestrahlt. Im deutschsprachigen Fernsehen lief die sechsteilige Produktion auf Arte. Ebenfalls 2015 erschien bei DuMont auf Deutsch ihre Autobiografie Von Geist und Geistern. 2018 gestaltete Walter Adler aus ihrem Roman Brüder für den WDR eine 26-teilige Hörspielserie. .
