Wagner is a noted needlepoint tapestries artist and who works in poetry, music, and the visual arts, one of the first Americans to write "concrete" poetry. The Schneider Museum of Art concluded in 1994 of the exhibition of his work they mounted there that "His work explores the borders between written and spoken language, signs and symbols, and the visual world of painting. For over two decades Wagner has been producing labor intensive, intricate embroideries that transpose the narrative text or voice of the poet into multi-colored textile images. His use of the medium is ironic." Sturdy, attractive, tightly bound hardcover, clean, if toned, minimal rubbing to extremities. Hardcover. Etat : fair to g. First edition. Quarto. XXII, 193, [1]pp. Original pictorial dust-jacket over gilt-stamped brown cloth, with gold lettering on spine and front cover. In this definitive work, the author sketches the geographical, historical and artistic background of Chinese rugs. He demonstrates (in 95 color plates and 60 monochrome plates) the singular colors of Chinese rugs, their symbols, their materials, the technique used in their manufacture, their development, and the way in which they differ fundamentally from all other Oriental rugs. Eastern Turkestan rugs are illustrated and examined for comparison. The book also includes descriptions and illustrations of rugs with specific uses (saddle rugs and pillar rugs) and the peculiar style and setting of rugs from the border regions of Kansu, Suiyan, Tibet and Mongolia. Sporadic creasing and closed tears along edges of dust-jacket. Previous owner's name on front free endpaper (Dr. Fred Krieger). Front hinge starting. Minor age-toning along paper margin.
