Paris, G. Mason, 1890, 8°, XVI, 394, (2), 1 Tafel und 164 Figuren im Text, orig. Halbleinenband; etwas felckig; mit eingebundener Titelbroschur. Erste Ausgabe! Étienne-Jules Marey (1830-1904) French scientist, physiologist and chronophotographer. His work was significant in the development of cardiology, physical instrumentation, aviation, cinematography and the science of laboratory photography. He is widely considered to be a pioneer of photography and an influential pioneer of the history of cinema. He was also a pioneer in establishing a variety of graphical techniques for the display and interpretation of quantitative data from physiological measurement." REFERENCES: Meyer A: The Science of Walking: Investigations into Locomotion in the Long Nineteenth Century, pp. 112-113: "During the 1870s Marey developed the first complex experimental setup for the systematic and comparative investigation of human and animal locomotion. The results of these first experiments on 'human locomotion' were reported in a variety of publications and summarized in the second major section of La machine animale (1873). Less well known, however, is the original study by Gaston Carlet, who conducted the initial studies together with Marey in his first laboratory at the Collège de France. Carlet presented his own work on 'natural gait', conceived under Marey's supervision, as complementary to Duchenne's."; Baker R: The history of gait analysis before the advent of modern computers, Gait & Posture 26 (2007), 331-342: "Student of Marey. First essentially correct description of gait cycle"; ?Marey was the first modern gait analyst although his work was not limited to movement. His early work on gait was all done in collaboration with his student Gaston Carlet (1849-1892). Carlet developed a shoe with three pressure transducers built into the sole and recorded the forces exerted by the foot on the floor. He was the first to record the double bump of the ground reaction. Various other experimental techniques were used and Carlet's thesis, published in 1872, concludes with a succinct description of the normal human gait cycle which is essentially accurate."; Braune W & Fischer O: The Human Gait, p. 4: "Carlet's researches constitute progress in that, for the first time, they involved an experimental determination of the trajectory in space which a point of the human body follows during walking. Braun M: Picturing Time: The Work of Etienne-Jules Marey (1830-1904),).
