Jauzac page 167; Bottin Pg. 168. Paris: Bibliothèque d'éducation et de récréation; J. Hetzel et cie. (1869), 267 and 220 pages. This is a nice looking copy with some repair work and some color retouch, cloth tear at bottom gutter. Very little foxing, bookseller pencils on second free end page.
Couverture rigide. - Hetzel, Paris 1904, 18x28cm, cartonnage de l'éditeur. - Edition illustrée de dessins de Riou et de Montaut. 1 frontispice général, 7 planches hors-texte, 3 pour Cinq semaines en ballon, 4 pour Le voyage au centre de la terre, certaines en polychromie, d'autres avec traces de polychromie et d'autres en noir. 3 pages de titre, une générale et deux particulières. Cartonnage éditeur Hetzel "à l'éventail et à l'éléphant avec titre dans le cartouche" en pleine percaline rouge. Premier plat polychrome signé Engel, second plat de type "i" comme indiqué par Jauzac, dos au phare, pages de garde bleues d'origines, toutes tranches dorées. Belle plaque supérieure aux ors bien brillants. Les deux coins bas repliés. Dos assez bien avec des salissures dans la vignette au phare et les coiffes affaissées avec une micro coupure en queue. Second plat très bien. Tranches parfaites. Exemplaire bien frais, hormis 2 petites rousseurs sur la page de titre de Cinq semaines en ballon. Volume bien homogène et solide. Très bel exemplaire de ce volume regroupant deux des plus célèbres titres de Jules Verne, rare dans ce cartonnage. Le Voyage au centre de la terre connaîtra plusieurs adaptations au cinéma dont la plus récente remonte à quelques années. [ENGLISH DESCRIPTION ON DEMAND].

Librairie Hachette et Cie, 1916, Collection Hetzel, Voyages Extraordinaires, (1904), 1 volume double de 264-220 pages, cartonnage à 1 éléphant avec titre dans le cartouche sous l'éventail, dos au phare, dernier plat portant à froid et au centre, le macaron losangique renfermant le monogramme de Hachette, second plat que Bottin avait qualifié de type "r" , gardes bleues, tranches dorées. Ors très légèrement ternis sur les tranches, des rousseurs par endroits, sinon bon état. Après le rachat de la maison Hetzel, Hachette réédite tous les volumes doubles et triples, à l'exception de L'Invasion de la mer - Le Phare du bout du monde sous ce cartonnage «à un éléphant» qui se distingue du Hetzel par son second plat.Utilisant les tirages Hetzel restant, certains de ces ouvrages portent donc sur la page de titre la marque de l'éditeur Hetzel. C'est pourquoi ce cartonnage est souvent qualifié d'hybride : un cartonnage Hachette renfermant une édition Hetzel.

~ Cartonnage polychrome un éléphant, dos 'au phare' et 'le Nautilus', le plat aux feuillages verts, titre dans l'éventail, relié par Engel (signé Engel en bas à droite du 1er plat et en bas du dos), le 2ème plat Engel de type i (Jauzac) avec rosace à motifs noirs JH, gardes bleues, tranches dorées ~ Deux oeuvres regroupés en un volume double, illustrations par Riou et de Montaut (dont 6 en chromolithographie au verso blanc), une carte à double page ~ 4f+264p+2f+220p ~ 28x19x4cm. ~ Belle plaque supérieure aux ors brillants, d'une grande fraîcheur. Second plat sans défaut. Petite usure de la vignette supérieure du dos dite 'au phare' avec micro pertes de couleur laissant apparaître le rouge, mais ors bien présents. Coiffes de tête et de queue repliées mais indemnes, avec trace d'infime frottement. Le bleu des gardes bien uniforme. Intérieur très propre, en dépit de rares et très minces rousseurs en marges de certains feuillets ~ Heavy item, circa 1.8 Kg. Reliure de l'époque de demi-cartonnage sapin à l'imitation de chagrin, dos lisse orné de filets dorés, fleurons dorés, titre doré, tranches mouchetées. Edition originale rare ; dépourvue de toute mention d'édition. ''Il existe deux éditions [parue à la même date] imprimées par deux éditeurs différents et ne portant aucune mention d'édition ; nous ne tranchons pas sur la priorité de l'une ou l'autre''. (in Bottin). L'adresse figurant sur le présent exemplaire est celle de l'Imprimerie Poupart-Davyl et Cie sise au 30 rue du Bac à Paris. ''Contrairement à ce qu?avance Piero Gondolo Della Riva dans sa Bibliographie analytique de toutes les ?uvres de Jules Verne, la présence de la couverture n?est pas indispensable pour reconnaître l?édition originale de ce titre : une mention d?édition apparaissant dès la seconde, L. Hardcover. Etat : Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. Appears to be the first illustrated edition. Vignettes Par Riou. Fully bound in leather with marbled endpapers to match the text block edges. Spine has 5 raised band and title label gilt on burgundy decorations in compartments. Spine recently rebacked but a good solid professional job. Book has light foxing to prelims & endpapers at rear. Half title page has an old closed tear (repaired). Inner hinges repaired but book all holds secure. Contemporary boards with gilt school arms & motto for The Lindens in Hastings. This school had one of the first football teams & an early rugby team in Hastings. The buildings later became a retirement & nursing home. Armorial bookplate of Christopher Henry Oldham Scaife on endpaper. He had an interesting & varied career - notes supplied with book. Book has school presentation inscription dated 1870 to Cecil Colvin Pitcairne, who also led an interesting life (again notes supplied with book). An attractive book with an interesting history.
